It was  an ugly, rainy day  in Tennessee yesterday, so while it was perfect for staying in and working on my list of cleaning, organizing and decluttering tasks I’ve got on my to-do list, it wasn’t a perfect internet day, so I couldn’t get this post up. This week I’m covering how to deep clean and organize your kitchen. That doesn’t mean getting lost in organizing the junk drawer, or the crazy lids cabinet, there will be time for that later. This task is meant to help you clean your surfaces and organize what is in plain sight.

Our Review:

This is one sleek, stylish faucet that will instantly upgrade your kitchen’s look and feel. My husband had it installed in no time. He was impressed with the high end look and extra touches Psifter added like including the deck plate that has an integrated seal at the bottom which will cover up the extra holes you may have in your old sink and keep it from leaking.

I enjoyed the Oohs and Aahs our new faucet received from family at Christmas! It really does look wonderful in our kitchen and goes well with our Stainless sink.

Welcome to my new series of home improvement, D.I.Y. and housekeeping posts! We are doing projects on a budget, happily applying common sense and a healthy dose of elbow grease.  I hope you’ll stop by often to see what we’ve been up to.

Kitchen Cabinet Help on a Budget:

Are you tired of your drab kitchen cabinets? Wish you could replace them? That’s where we are too.
When we bought this house several years ago, it was our plan to update the whole house starting with the kitchen and baths. My husband is a professional cabinet maker/woodworker, so finding the right person for the job isn’t the problem. Time and money is.

With company coming soon, I decided to do something about my kitchen cabinets.
First I borrowed my husband’s Formby’s Lemon Oil furniture treatment and one of his soft cloths. He said it was the best choice for what I wanted to do. He's the pro, so I knew our cabinets wouldn't get damaged.

As you can tell by the label, this stuff has been used and around for a while. It has a nice, mild lemony scent and isn’t real greasy.

After reading the simple directions, I squeezed a small amount on my cloth and set to work.

You can barely make out the little yellow spot in this picture.

This is a before picture of my 1st cabinet:

As you can see, the cabinet doesn’t look dirty, just a bit drab.

But the cloth after applying the Formby’s on this one cabinet tells a different story:

applying Formby's

I keep a pretty neat and tidy home if I do say so myself, so I wasn’t prepared for this yuckiness! I got back to work, applying a liberal amount of enthusiasm to the task. For me there is just something elemental and comforting about doing a task with my hands that allows my mind to work on other stuff. That’s called being in the zone and I like it.

See how shiny the cabinet door looks?

shiny with Formby's

I am very pleased with my new shiny, clean kitchen cabinets! Formby’s even shined up the hardware without making it greasy to the touch. I smile each time I walk in the kitchen.

This is such a quick and inexpensive way to brighten up your kitchen.
Total project cost = Zero, because we had the Formby’s on hand. I found several companies selling this product online for less than 10 dollars!
Total project time: To complete 13 upper and lower cabinets, inside and out plus drawers = 2 hours.

I hope you will try Formby’s on your kitchen cabinets too and stop back by and let me know what you think. I’ll be doing the bathroom cabinets next.

What are you working on around your home?

Having watched the slow cognitive decline of my mother-in-law a few years ago, I was highly interested in learning all I could from this cookbook.  According to the front flap of the book, the foods we choose to eat (or not) sit at the core of the Alzheimer’s epidemic. Those are powerful and hope-filled words!  Author and chef Annie Fenn, MD, makes a compelling case for this thinking in The Brain Health Kitchen Cookbook.

Ah, summer, how we love you! The season full of family traditions like road trips and sleeping in since there’s no school; eating ripe, juicy, summer fruits that drip down your chin and eating out instead of cooking in a hot kitchen.  Recently when we got hungry for a good home-style meal we didn’t have to cook, we headed to our local Cheddar’s Scratch Kitchen to let them do the cooking while we cooled off.

Have you ever gone to a lunch spot because you’d heard about their amazing sourdough rolls? That’s what led my daughter and I to drive to Nolensville, a quaint little suburb of Nashville a few weeks back to lunch at Wabash Southern Kitchen. If you’re local, you’ll want to add this hidden gem to your lunch spots.

The days may be getting longer, but make no mistake, winter isn’t leaving anytime soon. In the winter months, I struggle to drink enough water because my body isn’t sending out strong thirst signals like it does in the warm humid months. I knew it was time to up my hydration game, and thankfully, I’ve got a fantastic resource to help me do just that. Need hydration help too? I’m hosting a giveaway, so read on to learn more and enter to win The Complete Guide to Healthy Drinks.

Something magical happens when you bring your kids into the kitchen with you. From the time my girls were able to stand on a stool to help me prepare sweet treats or just their afternoon snack, I’ve loved watching their faces as they work in the kitchen. Sure, there will be messes and plenty of patience testing minutes- but all that is well worth all the fun you’ll have in the kitchen. I received my first box from Kidstir, a cooking kit subscription company recently and I wanted to share it with you today.

Maybe it’s the dreary weather, but February finds me wanting to clean and organize my home. I look around and see hot spots here and there, but I’m giving myself grace and reminding myself that this is a home full of people making these hot spots and it will take time to get to each area.  I’ve decided to start small with the most obvious hot spot- my kitchen cabinets and the plethora of plastic containers. I’ve tried getting rid of them completely, but that only lasts so long, because we are a family that cooks, so having handy storage containers is a must. Thankfully, a solution arrived when I was asked if I’d like to review Zoku products, including their Neat Stack Nesting Container Set, which will make organizing kitchen cabinets a snap!

Hello, and happy 2024! I might be overstating the obvious here, since my last blog post was on December 22,2023, but I have relished having time off to fully enjoy the holidays and my people. I’m coming back to work today feeling rested and ready to take on this new year full of possibilities. I rarely receive a book that my husband picks up and reads first, but that’s exactly what happened when I got a complimentary copy of America’s Test Kitchen’s The Outdoor Cook book and left it on the counter while I went running errands. Upon my return, my husband couldn’t wait to tell me how much he enjoyed flipping through the book and found it to be a great resource! I couldn’t agree more and so I’m thrilled to be hosting a giveaway for a copy and joining in the Hello Summer Giveaway Hop.

These questions and potentially finding the answers to my own nagging whisper had me happily agreeing to review a complimentary copy of The Hundred Story Home by Kathy Izard and to hosting a giveaway for 3 copies for you!

We are gearing up to have a fun family style Halloween at home this year, so we’ve been planning dinner, snacks, and drink options. In our house, we all like to cook, so no matter the season, refrigerator space is always in short supply. I cleaned out all the condiments and leftovers I could, but that didn’t free up much space for drinks. I recently received an invitation from Newair to try a  to try out a new appliance from them that solved this problem. They sent me a complimentary 16 bottle free-standing wine cooler fridge which will save valuable refrigerator space now and throughout the busy holiday season coming up. If you’ve every thought you couldn’t possibly squeeze one more thing into your fridge, read on for details.

There are a few products and brands that have my completely loyalty, but that leaves lots of room for me to try new products, which I love to do! Especially, new beauty and wellness products.  Over the last few weeks, I’ve been trying out new to me products and today I’d like to share eight new summer products to try with you.

New Summer Products!

8 New Summer Products to Try

I love receiving homemade gifts any time of year, but most especially on Mother’s Day.  We are a family of traditions and one that I adore is having the kids serve me breakfast they made themselves. When they were little, Daddy helped of course; but as they got older they wanted to take on more of the responsibility.  I’ve been served everything from toast with jam to chocolate covered strawberries. I know my daughters would love whipping up this simple Blueberry loaf recipe from celeb chef Zipora Einav for me. Baked goods make a perfect Mother’s Day gift!

Cleanliness is next to Fitness

in , , , , , by Linda A Kinsman, Friday, June 28, 2013

I’ve been catching up on my cleaning this week. First I got into my closet and let go of a serious amount of clothing I am never going to wear again. Not all these bags came from my closet, just the big bags.

Good news: lots of the clothes were too big or just didn’t hang right on my body now.

Bad news: I still have bins of cute, classy clothes I can’t fit in. I sigh as I write this because I know the solution is simple: eat smart, move more.  But, I am a blogger and home office administrator who sits to work.

BUT, I am also a homemaker who loves a neat, clean home. The solution, or at least part of the solution for me getting into those cute clothes is to clean more, sit less.

I set this in motion right away, planning wahm that I am, by giving my floors a good scrubbing.

No Swiffer action here, no ma’am.

I’m talking old school, double sweep, double mop with bucket, ringing out the Lemon Lysol water type scrubbing. I even cleaned the baseboards while I was at it. That’s a perk of mopping floors old-school, you get clean baseboards too.

By the time I’d completed the kitchen, foyer and three baths I was sweaty. No lie.  Like I’d completed a good fast walk. Clean floors, good smelling house and I broke a sweat?

Win!

kitchen
My clean kitchen floor. Bare feet bliss.

I felt so good about it; I had to check how many calories and hour or so of scrubbing floors burned. According to Fitness Magazine, I burned 112 calories per 30 minutes. I worked for about an hour, so my total would be 224!

Next time I’m feeling bad because I didn’t work out, I’m going to get up and clean something!

How about you?

Do you count household chores towards your fitness goals?

15 chores you can tackle in 15 minutes or less

in , , , , , , by Linda A Kinsman, Monday, June 30, 2014

Summer is such a fun season. We wait for it all year, planning and dreaming of those long, hot summer days and what we’ll do in them.

Summer Fun Activities:

swimming summer fun

  • Swimming
  • Traveling
  • Enjoying summer fruits
  • Picnics
  • BBQ’s
  • Bonfires
  • Sleepovers
  • Gardening

The one thing we don’t plan and dream of is summer chores. I don’t know about you, but at my house, once the kids are out of school my chore time increases. From sticky kitchen tables and counters to the ever-present need to sweep up tracked in grass and dirt, I felt like I could not keep up until I made this one simple change.

Cleaning clothes

Take a Break from Work-do a quick chore:

I take a break from work every 30 minutes or so and do a quick chore. Taking these mini-breaks helps me be more productive, helps increase my energy while decreasing my seat time and helps lessen my chore list when I do switch gears and stop working for the day. You’d be surprised how much you can get done in 10 - 15 minutes!

15 chores you can tackle in 15 minutes or less:

Here are 15 quick chores that I do. Feel free to copy my list to get you started.

  1. Fold a load of laundry, put it away and start a new one.
  2. Sweep the kitchen and mudroom floor.
  3. Wipe down bathroom counters and mirrors.
  4. Water plants on the front porch.
  5. Clean out the trash in the car.
  6. Go through the mail and recycle junk mail.
  7. Deadhead flowers and pinch back herbs.
  8. Check pantry supplies for a weekly meal plan.
  9. Dust a room and put away discarded items.
  10. Unload dishwasher.
  11. Wipe down kitchen table and chairs.
  12. Clean out Frig drawers.
  13. Clean photo frames in the hall.
  14. Update coupons.
  15. Wipe down glass doors.

WAHM's Re-Energize:

If you work away from home all day, you can still use this list to tackle your chores. Taking a break every 30 minutes to do something you enjoy like sipping a cool drink while reading will help you feel re-energized once you do return to your chore list.

Delegate Chores:

Be sure to delegate some of your chores to your kids if they are old enough and especially if they find you mid-task and tell you they are bored! I always find a task my daughters can handle. Just remember to be good to yourself and step away from work too so you can fully enjoy this special season.

Enjoy Summer!

Please share in comments: If you could wish away one household chore forever, what would it be? For me, it’s cleaning showers!
