Tomorrow marks the first official day of winter, which for most gardeners, or those aspiring to be, is the perfect time to be warm and cozy inside, while dreaming of what we want to do outside once the weather is warm again. I can think of no better book for garden dreaming and planning than The Garden Journal, a beautiful five-year record-keeping tool by Linda Vater. As a special thanks to my readers, I’m hosting a giveaway for a hardbound copy of this book.

A Garden for Grace Book Review and Giveaway

in , , , , , by Linda A Kinsman, Thursday, July 14, 2022

I receive a lot of emails on any given day asking me if I’d like to review books that cover a wide array of genres, and usually, I can tell from the email copy if I’m interested. If you've been around my blog for a while, you know I love gardening and flowers and books- most especially, books about gardening and flowers! so of course I happily agreed to review and host a giveaway for a Garden for Grace, which is simply one of the sweetest books I’ve read in a long time.

A Garden for Grace Book

We’ve finally made it to the end of January, and we can officially start the countdown to spring! With only 48 days of winter left, it’s time for us to start planning our gardens, which is one of my favorite winter activities. If you’ve read my blog or social media posts, you know I love flowers. I’m a cottage garden girl all the way! I lost a few plants last year including one of my oldest Peonies to some sort of infestation, so this book Attracting Beneficial Bugs to your Garden has come at a perfect time for me. I’ve been studying it on chilly winter nights and taking notes during my lunch breaks to better prepare myself for the gardening year ahead. Read on to learn more about gardening bugs (the good and the bad) and enter to win our first giveaway of the year!

Spring Is Coming!

I can’t believe we are in the middle of July already. With the sultry summer days upon us, adding more plants outside may not sound appealing, but these two books can help. The first book, Micro Food Gardening will show you how to plant tiny plants that will grow and thrive in small spaces like windowsills and front porches or stoops. The second book, Tiny Plants, will welcome you into the world of miniature house plants that will thrive in small spaces too. Read on to learn how to enter the giveaway for these two small, but mighty gardening book resources.

I first learned about today’s book author, Nicole Johnsey Burke on my Instagram feed. Her account, GardenaryCo. is a lush, colorful garden paradise! If you love to garden, or want to start, you’ll want to follow that Instagram account for sure. Today’s post is about her newest book-  Kitchen Garden Revival- A modern guide to creating a stylish, small scale, low maintenance edible garden. I am thrilled to hold this book in my hands! I have talked myself out of having another garden for one too many seasons, but not this summer. It’s not too late for me or you to have a small kitchen garden this year, so let’s get started.

Fresh from the Garden!

On Memorial Day, I celebrated another trip around the sun by spending time with my family who showered me with love and lots of goodies to plant and tend to in my garden. They know that being in nature, surrounded by flowers, herbs and lush greenery is my Zen. One of the pluses of being in my fifties is I know myself really well and I’ve come to accept that my body, while still very capable, will respond to a day in the garden with aches and pains, especially in my back and knees by nightfall. Thankfully, I’ve discovered some simple steps to relieve my sore muscles that I think will help you this summer too.

The Complete Book of Ferns Giveaway

in , , , , , , by Linda A Kinsman, Friday, January 31, 2020

It’s the last Friday of the first month of the year, so let’s celebrate with a giveaway!  I’m ready for whimsical February to arrive and bring along some warmer temperatures. While we wait for garden season, I’ve been reading gardening books and sharing them here with you. Recently, I’ve been learning about Ferns from The Complete Book of Ferns by Mobee Weinstein. I’ve been wanting to add ferns to my outdoor gardens, so being asked if I’d like to review it and host a giveaway was a happy bit of luck.

Wordless Wednesday: Midsummer Blooms

in , , , , , by Linda A Kinsman, Wednesday, July 17, 2019

Rose of Sharon bloom with raindrops

Yesterday started out like many spring mornings, with grey skies and a light, gentle rain. Nothing like the previous night's storms that broke off a big branch of my just blooming Hawthorne tree! As I stood at my window and surveyed the damage, the quote "A goal without a plan is just a wish" by Antione de Saint Exupery was top of mind.

Planning out my Gardening Goals:

I pulled out my brand new garden journal, deciding to write my gardening ideas and goals down this year. There's lots of hard work and lifting ahead, so I'm not going to let light bladder leakage (LBL) keep me from my gardening goals!

Color of the Month- March 2016 Succulent Green

in , , , , , by Linda A Kinsman, Friday, March 11, 2016
If we named months by the color we associated with them, March would simply have to be called green if you ask me! Green is everywhere! From the tiny light green fronds on my weeping willow, to the verdant green grass I see from my window, to the delicate green leaves of my newly emerging succulents. The photo of them below was the inspiration for March's color of the month.

I've curated a Pinterest board full of beautiful succulent greens this month. If you have a pin that would be perfect for my collection, leave me a comment and I'll add it!

The dog days of summer aren't upon us yet, but things are heating up in the south come July.  Watering is a daily chore that I really don't mind- most days. Happy July, happy gardening readers!
