About Kitchen Garden Living by Bailey Van Tassel: Publishing January 7, 2025, by Cool Springs Press ∙ Hardcover, 184 pages, Genre-Garden, House, Home
Are you ready to disconnect from the hustle and reconnect with what matters most- food, family and the natural world? With this season by season guide, you’ll build a wholesome life focused on the seasonality of the food you grow with this chic and savvy guide to creating, tending, and sharing the goodness of a kitchen garden.
In Kitchen Garden Living, author and Kitchen Garden Society founder Bailey Van Tassel guides you through the process of establishing a kitchen garden of your own, helping you with all the necessary steps to get your new garden started and guiding you through to the harvest and beyond.
Organized by chapters titled Plan, Grow, Tend, Make, Gather, Connect, and Inspire, the projects and lessons found here are designed to help you succeed, no matter the size or location of your kitchen garden.
Bailey offers guidance on discovering your garden style, designing, and laying out beds, living and eating seasonally, caring for both the garden and you, preparing and preserving the harvest, involving family, and much more.
With this inspiring and supportive book as your guide, you’ll bring value to your family and your community in ways you never thought possible. As Bailey says, ‘Together, in these pages, we’ll start a garden from scratch and explore how to bring it to life, letting it inspire our days.’ She adds, ‘There’s gardening, and then there’s kitchen gardening, which involves all sorts of usefulness and joy for ourselves and others in a way that’s uniquely gratifying.’
My Thoughts:
This is a delightful book to read! It’s filled with beautiful photos and tips that are concise, easy to follow and inspiring. For instance, even though it's November and my traditional gardening season is over, Bailey offers wonderful ideas on enjoying the upcoming Winter Solstice.
- Make a Yule Log
- Light candles after the sun goes down and use them as your only source of light for the evening
- Make a wreath out of foraged boughs and berries
- Set intentions for the new year
I love that everything is listed by the seasons, so no matter when you pick up this book, you can easily find inspiration in highlight boxes on the pages. Say for instance you too have an interest in foraging, there’s a box for that called Foragables. For winter we can forage for wood sorrel, acorns, crab apples, pine.
The Takeaway:
Winter is the perfect time for us to tuck into a gardening book or two and dream of next year's bounty! Every year I say I want to grow more food, but I’ve only managed to add more spices to the mix in the last couple of years. Don’t get me wrong, growing your own spices is a very rewarding endeavor, but in 2025, I’d love to have loads of vegetables in my harvest basket. I think this book will help.
By reading Kitchen Garden Living, you’ll learn to:
- Design and build a one of kind kitchen garden
- Plan, plant, and tend a diversity of edible plants
- Live and eat with the seasons
- Prepare and preserve the harvest
