Eat and Drink Your Veggies:

Cantaloupe-Turmeric Juice

One of the very best things about this recipe book that focuses on hydration, is its use of fruits, vegetables, herbs, teas and more good for you ingredients. If one of your goals is to eat better, like Eat The Rainbow better, this healthy drinks guide offers 160 recipe ideas to help us do it!

Case in point, look at the colorful Cantaloupe-Turmeric Juice recipe in the above photo. With just three ingredients, ( Turmeric, Yellow Summer Squash, Peeled Cantaloupe) you can make a serving or two of an earthy, citrusy juice blend that's good for you.

Why I’m adding this to my healthy drink line up:

I’m sure you’ve heard the saying, “we eat with our eyes first”. I’m a firm believer in that statement. As I was marking recipes I wanted to try, this one really jumped out at me, so I dug deeper. Beyond my need to be more hydrated, I believe my eyes led me to want this juice because it uses turmeric.  Turmeric which is a fantastic anti-inflammatory and improves heart health, and since my husband and I are in our fifties, we need to watch out for inflammation triggers and our heart health.  I'm adding this juice drink to my weekly line up of healthy drinks for my husband and I to share.

A Recipe book that goes beyond just sharing the Recipe:

America’s Test Kitchen has thought of everything as the tested and walked through each of the recipes in this book. They didn’t stop at just sharing the Cantaloupe- Turmeric Juice recipe, they shared what juicer works best, a key to how long to pulse/blend each fruit AND on what speed and lastly, each recipe has substitutions on the page. If you don’t have fresh turmeric, use a pinch of ground instead.

Make your Own Flavored Waters and Sodas with fresh Syrups:

Tonic Syrup

I usually don’t drink sodas, except at social events when it would be rude not to partake in a float, or a social drink made with them. I love the flavorful, fizzy taste, but not the unhealthy ingredients including lots of sugar. I was delighted to see a whole chapter dedicated to flavored waters, sodas, spritzes and fizzes. These are my kind of drinks, with or without alcohol!

The delightful yellow Tonic Syrup recipe (above photo) makes 5 cups, enough for about 8 sodas.

Yes, it would be easier to just buy tonic water or a pre-made syrup to add to seltzer water, and if I’m shot on time, I will do just that (thanks ATK for the idea), but first, I want to try making my own tonic syrup soda.

Use Ingredients you have on Hand:

The great thing about many of these recipes is you can purchase stock ingredients like citric acid,  that you’ll use over and over again as you work your way through this recipe book. You’ll also be pleasantly surprised at how many of the recipes you can do right now with a quick pantry raid. Most kitchens have sugars, salts, citrus, milk and fruit (either fresh or frozen) at the ready.  For instance, I have everything I need to make this delightful looking London Fog Tea Latte this evening.

Again, I want to share this healthy drink with my husband. Now that we're almost empty nesters, I'm finding new ways to connect with him and you'll see that reflected more and more here on the blog as it evolves into our next stage with us.

All I need is loose Earl Grey Tea leaves (this is my favorite tea!), cardamom pod, hot water, dairy or plant based milk and vanilla extract. Again, don’t get hung up on exact ingredients. If you don’t have cardamom, use cloves, nutmeg, ginger or cinnamon instead! Your Latte will be uniquely yours and that to me, is how you find joy in cooking. In fact, America’s Test Kitchen promotes the art of learning by telling us to simply Eat Our Mistakes in the last chapter of the book on fermenting.

The Takeaway:

I love this recipe book and learned alot about mixing herbs and spices to add flavor without relying so heavily on sugar and salt. I also learned about topics I didn’t think I’d find interesting like fermenting to make Kombucha, Kefir and Tepache.
