I rarely receive a book that my husband picks up and reads first, but that’s exactly what happened when I got a complimentary copy of America’s Test Kitchen’s The Outdoor Cook book and left it on the counter while I went running errands. Upon my return, my husband couldn’t wait to tell me how much he enjoyed flipping through the book and found it to be a great resource! I couldn’t agree more and so I’m thrilled to be hosting a giveaway for a copy and joining in the Hello Summer Giveaway Hop.

Hello Summer: Let's Cook Outdoors!

Hello Summer cookbook giveaway and hop

My thanks to America's Test Kitchen for the complimentary copy of The Outdoor Cook Book for review purposes and for hosting a giveaway.

About The Outdoor Cook by America’s Test Kitchen:

The Outdoor Cook Book

If you want to learn how to cook anything outside using your grill, fire pit, flat-top, and more, this 342-page cookbook is for you. My husband loves cooking outside as often as possible. Grilling is usually the quickest and easiest route, especially on weeknights, so I was happy with a section devoted to quick and easy meals in Two Hands Needed, which showcases tasty sandwich and burger recipe ideas like these Grilled Portobello Burgers with Goat Cheese and Arugula.

But, I’m getting ahead of myself. First, The Outdoor Cook book talks about getting outside and naturally, starting a fire. Another one of my husband’s favorite things. Here’s a photo of our recent bonfire. We both agree that this ember bed would have been perfect for open-fire cooking. I'm sure we could have whipped up something tasty.

Open Fire Cooking Option:

Embers, perfect for open fire cooking

The Let’s Go Outside section covers the How-To’s which I found very helpful. Subjects include:

  • Start a Fire
  • Grilling 101 for gas grills, charcoal grills, and flat-top grills
  • Open-Fire Cooking * of special interest to my husband*
  • Cooking with Smoke
  • Fuel for the fire
  • Equipment to fan the flames
  • Safety and Upkeep

I am enjoying getting meal ideas from the large chapter on Weeknight Meals. It is such a blessing when my husband cooks on weeknights too. Double love if that meal can be cooked outside. There’s less mess and more flavors and time to converse while the fire works its magic.

I want us to make their Grilled Garam Masala, Chicken, Tomatoes, and Naan with Chutney dinner soon.  One of the things I found especially helpful in this cookbook is the cooking method guide shown on the top left of each recipe. For instance, we can either use a grill or an open-flame cooking method for the Masala.

My Thoughts:

This is a fantastic cookbook resource for anyone wanting to cook outdoors. From seasoned grillers and smokers like my husband to novice grillers like myself, this cookbook shows you in straightforward, easy-to-understand terms how to go from prep to eating great meals and snacks easily.  If you’d like to learn more about The Outdoor Cook, visit America’s Test Kitchen.

The Takeaway:

This cookbook will be used often this summer and fall by both my husband and me, which to me, makes it a great resource to have. It would make a fabulous Father’s Day gift and I think if you ordered right away, it might arrive in time. I would have put it in my 5 Father’s Day Gift Ideas for Every Budget, but I wanted to have it as my entry for the Hello Summer Giveaway Hop. More details about that are below.
