15 chores you can tackle in 15 minutes or less

in , , , , , , by Linda A Kinsman, Monday, June 30, 2014

Summer is such a fun season. We wait for it all year, planning and dreaming of those long, hot summer days and what we’ll do in them.

Summer Fun Activities:

swimming summer fun

  • Swimming
  • Traveling
  • Enjoying summer fruits
  • Picnics
  • BBQ’s
  • Bonfires
  • Sleepovers
  • Gardening

The one thing we don’t plan and dream of is summer chores. I don’t know about you, but at my house, once the kids are out of school my chore time increases. From sticky kitchen tables and counters to the ever-present need to sweep up tracked in grass and dirt, I felt like I could not keep up until I made this one simple change.

Cleaning clothes

Take a Break from Work-do a quick chore:

I take a break from work every 30 minutes or so and do a quick chore. Taking these mini-breaks helps me be more productive, helps increase my energy while decreasing my seat time and helps lessen my chore list when I do switch gears and stop working for the day. You’d be surprised how much you can get done in 10 - 15 minutes!

15 chores you can tackle in 15 minutes or less:

Here are 15 quick chores that I do. Feel free to copy my list to get you started.

  1. Fold a load of laundry, put it away and start a new one.
  2. Sweep the kitchen and mudroom floor.
  3. Wipe down bathroom counters and mirrors.
  4. Water plants on the front porch.
  5. Clean out the trash in the car.
  6. Go through the mail and recycle junk mail.
  7. Deadhead flowers and pinch back herbs.
  8. Check pantry supplies for a weekly meal plan.
  9. Dust a room and put away discarded items.
  10. Unload dishwasher.
  11. Wipe down kitchen table and chairs.
  12. Clean out Frig drawers.
  13. Clean photo frames in the hall.
  14. Update coupons.
  15. Wipe down glass doors.

WAHM's Re-Energize:

If you work away from home all day, you can still use this list to tackle your chores. Taking a break every 30 minutes to do something you enjoy like sipping a cool drink while reading will help you feel re-energized once you do return to your chore list.

Delegate Chores:

Be sure to delegate some of your chores to your kids if they are old enough and especially if they find you mid-task and tell you they are bored! I always find a task my daughters can handle. Just remember to be good to yourself and step away from work too so you can fully enjoy this special season.

Enjoy Summer!

Cute & Easy Birdhouses #craft

in , , , , , , by Linda A Kinsman, Wednesday, June 25, 2014

Inspired by all the cute birdhouses I saw recently on Plaid Craft, I thought this would be a perfect rainy day craft for my girls, and they happily agreed. So, off to Walmart we went.
You can pick up the supplies at any craft store, major retailer, or purchase online. Before you go shopping, double check your crafts supplies for foam brushes, stamps, stencils, etc. You may only need to buy the birdhouses!

Supplies Needed:

Small Birdhouses (we bought two)
1 Set of foam brushes
Assorted Apple Barrel paints (we bought six)
1 set of Stencils

#craft supplies

Another great thing about this craft is it is budget friendly.  I spent $11.32, and we will be able to re-use all the supplies except the birdhouses.

Directions:

Make sure all the glue from the labels/price stickers are off.
Pull or buff off any rough spots on wood. (Use a fingernail file if necessary.)
Now, your birdhouses are ready to paint.

Allow base coat to dry. (About 4 mins.)

Add additional colors as desired, using stencils, stamps, or free style; anything goes.

As you can see, my daughters used different styles and painting techniques on their birdhouses. Both of them are very happy with their finished project, which makes crafting so rewarding.

This craft really is cute, easy and budget friendly. Please let me know if you try it with your kids.

Any visitor to our home will quickly learn that we are a cat family.  Our outside cat will greet you from her perch on the front porch, while our indoor cats will try to figure you out from one of their many window views.

These 3 cats are cherished members of our family and enrich our lives, so feeding them the best food for their age and stage is very important to us. That’s why I was thrilled when my cats were selected to try Wellness Dry Cat Food and Wellness Divine Duo's Formula wet food in partnership with BlogPaws. While I will receive compensation to thank me for my time, all opinions are my own.

This wet food helps promote hydration for our cats, which is an important part to their overall health.

If this duo doesn’t sound like something your Cat or kitten would like, there are 5 flavor options including Chicken Pate & Diced Turkey, Chicken Pate & Diced Duck, Tilapia Pate & Diced Ahi Tuna and Tuna Pate & Diced Salmon.

Don’t some of these flavor combo’s sound delicious?

Next I served my Cats the Wellness Complete Indoor Health. What was assuring to me is this food addresses concerns I have about my indoor cats including weight gain, dry skin and hairballs.

It's Friday and summer starts tomorrow, so I figured that was reason enough to end this week with an Awesome giveaway! I've teamed up with PartnersHub and Warner Bros. to give one lucky reader a chance to win a copy of The Lego Movie on Blu-Ray! Plus, some winners may receive a Lego mini toy.

About The Lego Movie:
"The LEGO® Movie, the first-ever, full-length theatrical LEGO® adventure, directed by Phil Lord & Christopher Miller is an original 3D computer animated story that follows Emmet, an ordinary, rules-following, perfectly average LEGO mini figure who is mistakenly identified as the most extraordinary person and the key to saving the world. He is drafted into a fellowship of strangers on an epic quest to stop an evil tyrant, a journey for which Emmet is hopelessly and hilariously under prepared.
Chris Pratt (Money ball) stars as the voice of Emmet. Will Ferrell (The Campaign) stars as the voice of his primary adversary, President Business, an erudite, anal-retentive CEO who has a hard time balancing world domination with micro-managing his own life; while Liam Neeson (Taken) voices the president's powerful henchman, known as Bad Cop, who will stop at nothing to catch Emmet.
Starring as Emmet's fellow travelers are Oscar® winner Morgan Freeman (Million Dollar Baby), as Vitruvius, an old mystic; Elizabeth Banks (The Hunger Games, Emmy nominee for 30 Rock), as tough-as-nails Lucy, who mistakes Emmet for the savior of the world and guides him on his quest; Will Arnett (Emmy nominee, 30 Rock), as the mysterious Batman, a LEGO mini figure with whom Lucy shares a history; Nick Offerman (NBC's Parks and Recreation) as a craggy, swaggering pirate, obsessed with revenge on President Business; and Alison Brie (Community) as a sweet, lovable member of the team, with a powerful secret."

The Wait is over

in , , , , , by Linda A Kinsman, Monday, June 16, 2014

This is a very happy Monday for me because my new blog design is installed and working perfectly!

This new design, lovingly crafted and installed by Jana from littlewebwritinghood fits my personality by being clean, functional, professional and pretty.

Now I’m ready to get back to the business of blogging because I feel good about my blog- I know I’ll be putting my best foot forward so to speak. And if I never see that particular shade of green that was prevalent in my old blog design, so much the better!

If you are ready for a new look for your blog- I highly recommend Jana! Visit her Etsy shop for pre-made Blogger and WordPress templates, or you can hire her to make a custom template for you. She is a professional all the way- answering emails quickly, giving updates on status, has a very quick turnaround, is budget friendly and is super nice!

Plus- she was more than willing to change the design as we went along. For instance, we both decided pretty quickly that the font I’d chosen for my header wasn’t going to look the way I wanted it. Jana’s solution was to make me 5 header options to choose from, free of charge.
It’s hard to find a business that will go the extra mile these days- but littlewebwritinghood did.
She doesn’t know I’m writing about her here, she didn’t ask for any special promotion, even though I offered. An Etsy review was all she wanted. Of course I’ll be writing her a raving review on Etsy- but I wanted to shine a special light on her and her business because she is a gem!

I participated in an Influencer Activation Program on behalf of Mom Central Consulting for BGCA.  I received a promotional item to thank me for participating. However, all opinions are 100% my own.

As a Mom of a teen and a tween, I found this cyber safe initiative compelling because keeping them safe in this rapid fire, digital sharing age is a bit daunting. Teens tend to communicate via electronic devices exclusively. Phone calls are almost extinct. With all their texts, tweets, selfie sharing and snap-chatting, our kids build solid friendships- but there is also lot of room for clichés excluding peers, misinterpretation, hurt feelings and bullying.

Even though I consider myself a socially savvy Mom who has open relationships with her daughters, I found a wealth of helpful information at BGCA’s website for parents and teens.

About BGCA’s #CyberSafe Futures:

Talking to your kids about online safety is the first step.” BGCA understands that growing up in the digital age is tough on teens and parents. That’s why BGCA, in partnership with Sprint put together a #CyberTribe of expert teens to help answer questions facing kids online.

The first thing I did when I visited the BGCA cybersafe site was take the “Are you a Cyber Smart Parent?” quiz .

The good news?  I am a socially savvy Mom.

 BGCA#CyberSafe button

Go here to take the quiz yourself.

After taking the quiz, I checked out the Resource Page. Resource Topics include: Cyberbullying, Social Networks, Mobile Technologies and Online Privacy.

Here's the link to the Teen Resources page.  Once there, your teen can explore life skills, arts, health, programs and more.

Next I asked a #CyberTribe Question because if you want insights on teens- who better to ask than a teen. This is a weekly Q & A session,  so head on over and submit your questions.  Plus,  when you ask a question, you are entered to win an IPad mini!

Navigating this site is super easy for parents and teens, so I invite you to check it out and forward the link to your teen because as BGCA says: “Every teen deserves a #cybersafe future.”

Please share in comments: Have you or your child experienced cyber bullying or felt unsafe online?

Disclosure: I received one or more of the products or services mentioned above for free in the hope that I would mention it on my blog. Regardless, I only recommend products or services I use personally and believe will be a good for my readers. Mid- Year Progress Report time

in , , , , , by Linda A Kinsman, Tuesday, June 03, 2014

Hello my dear readers. We have made it to the third day of June, 2014. I shake my head at this phenomenon, not quite believing it. Time really does march on whether we want it to or not doesn’t it?

As I was flipping yet another calendar page this morning, I started thinking about all my hopes and plans I had at the beginning of this year and I thought it would be a great time to check my progress before the slower pace of summer takes over.

I’m not one to make New Year’s resolutions- but I do make goals and plans and I’m betting you do some sort of evaluation and dreaming for the bright and shiny new year as well.

I’m not going to share my list here, but I will touch on a few key subjects I’ve been paying attention to this year and give myself a grade.

1. Work smarter, not harder.  When I wrote that on a fresh piece of paper way back in January, my goal was to be more mindful in each task and not allow myself to be pulled from one task to another and lose my work flow.

Grade to date: A

2. Make time for offline pursuits.  As most Bloggers will attest, blogging requires a lot of online time. From posting, to uploading photos to sharing on social channels- there is a lot of moving parts, most all online.

Grade to date: B-

3. Take better care of myself.  Running two small businesses is a sedentary lifestyle that I thought I had a handle on, but the mirror and my activity level said otherwise. I wanted to feel fit again. Okay- maybe not Jillian Michael's fit, but my body type fit again.

Grade to date: C

My mid-year progress report isn’t stellar, but it isn’t all bad either. I see lots of positive progress and room for growth.

Best of all- I see that I still have time. Instead of feeling bad that today is the 154th day of the year and I’m not knocking it out of the park- I prefer to think there is still time to accomplish my goals since there is 205 days until Christmas and 211 days until we start a shiny new year.

If you are feeling rushed, stressed and pulled in too many directions at this point in the year, maybe you should schedule a mid-year progress report time with yourself. Find a quite spot and honestly assess your point in life today. I bet you’ll come away with some pretty solid grades as well.

Please share in comments- do you make new year resolutions?

Here’s to a happy, stress free summer for all!
