Doing my Part for No More

by Linda A Kinsman, Monday, October 08, 2012

Have you heard of No More? I hadn't either until last week when I received an email from Mom Central Consulting inviting me to lend my voice to this new initiative to get parents talking about an uncomfortable subject, physical or sexual abuse.

As the mother of two daughters,  I feel it is my duty to help in any way I can.

Below is the message from Mom Central that led me to act. Perhaps after you read it, you will feel led to help this worthy cause as well.

It's every parent's worst nightmare: finding out (or worse, not finding out) that their child has been a victim of physical or sexual abuse. These issues are uncomfortable to talk about and frightening to imagine, but they are happening. Studies show nearly 1 in 10 teenagers will experience physical violence from a dating partner and 1 in 3 girls and 1 in 7 boys will experience sexual abuse in childhood, more often than not, from someone they know.

Our failure to talk about these issues, to recognize the warning signs, and to create supportive environments in our homes, schools and communities where victims are able to come forward are all reasons why they continue to happen. We are all bystanders to the violence and abuse that goes on in our circles of influence and it's time for that to end.
Mom Central is proud to announce that we are partnering with a new initiative to help get parents talking about these issues and put them into the national spotlight. It's called NO MORE. NO MORE is a powerful new symbol, like the red AIDS ribbon or the yellow "support our troops" ribbon, designed to bring everyone together - prevention organizations, celebrity advocates, and moms and dads like you who want to make a difference - to raise national awareness around domestic violence and sexual assault for the first time.
We hope that you will join us and lend your powerful voice to spreading the word. We will no longer stand by while these victims - potentially our children, friends and co-workers - suffer in silence and fear.

Mom Central is joining the ranks of NO MORE's early adopters and contributors who include actress Mariska Hargitay, teen pop singer Jasmine Villegas, the SR2 Motorsports NASCAR Team and marketing minds from Google and Facebook.

My WAHM Plan is proud to join them by posting this badge.

Thank you.

CampusBookRental.com #Review

in , , , , by Linda A Kinsman, Thursday, October 04, 2012

With one daughter in middle school and one in elementary school, I thought I had a few more years to think about college tuition, courses and books. I was happy to stay in the here and now, setting aside what we could for college and praying for partial scholarships.
Sound familiar?

Then a few weeks into the school year, I had a conversation with a teacher at my daughter's middle school that changed my way of thinking completely. This teacher shared her knowledge on higher education, college entrance procedures and costs.
She offered advice on helping us prep for high school and college beyond AP classes. Yes, my daughter is only an 8th grader, but we must have our eye on her college needs now. As this teacher told me, if you wait until 10th grade, you are behind!

charity

This is from CampusBookRental’s website:

"We have teamed up with Operation Smile, an out of this world, awesome organization, that performs life changing cleft lip surgeries on children whose families could not otherwise afford it. The long term Improvement in quality of life for the children that receive these surgeries is almost incomprehensible. We have committed to donating enough money to cover a minimum of 1,000 life changing surgeries. We hope to beat that number, but it's a significant commitment. Like Big!

So for EVERY book rented this year, we will donate a portion of the proceeds to Operation Smile with our sights set on meeting and exceeding our goal of 1,000 lives changed. So add that extra book to your cart, and consider this goal as you go back to school this year. CampusBookRentals.com supports the children of Operation Smile, and we thank you for your support.

You can read about our commitment here:

Fall, One of the Happiest Seasons of All

in , , , , , , by Linda A Kinsman, Monday, September 24, 2012

I simply adore this season for a host of reasons and I have passed on that love to my girls.

fall cooking baking fun

The other morning it was a little chiller than normal and the front window was steamed up from our cat looking out. I hadn’t even noticed it as I got my oldest to the bus on time; but it was THE first thing my youngest noticed. She was so happy to see that steamed up window.  Why does that make you so happy I asked? Because she said “it means that baking season is here”! She is her mother’s daughter.
As if by some physic link my oldest texted my from the bus saying that the nice crisp morning made her think about my Apple Pie. Coincidence? I think not.
See it has been so ghastly hot this summer, here, there, everywhere! That I haven’t done much baking. I was loath to turn the oven on for the 2 minutes it takes to broil some sourdough crustini’s, but there was simply no way my family was doing without them.
We love fall here, not just for the baking, but for the cooking of favorite recipes and the seasonal activities- Fall Festivals, watching football games, going for nature walks on our property, driving down the Natchez Trace to look at the pretty leaves, raking up our own batch of pretty leaves, yard work and prep that is soothing in its traditions. Ever since my girls were little they have helped my ready our yard and porches for winter. This year will be no different. With one exception: they are bigger and filled with more stories and memories.
Fall is a busy, happy time here and I hope it is for you and yours.
Do you love Fall as well? What is your favorite Fall activity? Share your love with us!
