With another birthday nearing, I decided it was time to make my health and wellness a
priority by moving more, improving my sleep, and like many of you have
discussed on social media, I need to reverse some of the pandemic weight gain
so that I can fully enjoy summer. I read an article about taking a look at what
you do from the very moment you wake up and see if you can make positive changes.
For me that meant overhauling my morning coffee, so when Viva Naturals offered
to send me their MCT Oil for review, I took it as a sign to give coffee with
organic MCT oil a try.

Before
I discuss my thoughts on using MCT oil in my coffee, I’d like to share what MCT
is for those of you who like me, are just starting out on a weight management
and/or Keto journey and are thinking about adding MCT oil to your daily
regimen.
What is MCT and why should I use it?
According
to the Viva Naturals website: “Your body handles MCTs (medium-chain triglycerides)
differently than most other types of fat. You wouldn’t think so, but MCT oil
can actually help you burn body fat as a source of fuel when you’re on a low–
or no-carb diet and can’t rely on carbs to keep you going. Made with 100%
organic, non-GMO coconuts, Viva Naturals Organic MCT Oil is an easy and
convenient way to get these energy-supporting fats into your wellness routine.
Add them to salads, sauces, smoothies, coffee and more.”
Why put MCT Oil in Coffee?
Simply put, MCT oil in coffee is fat-burning and energy support made simple. By adding it to your coffee in the morning, it will become part of your morning routine, which will help you stay on track. And, according to their website “Viva Naturals Organic MCT Oil is perfect for low-carb dieters looking to support ketosis, weight management, mental energy & focus".* See their website for more info.
How much MCT Oil should you put in your coffee?
The suggested use on the MCT oil package says to take
up to one tablespoon (15ml) per day or as recommended by your health care practitioner.
Some may find it beneficial to start with one teaspoon (5ml) and work their way
up to one tablespoon. Excessive consumption may cause stomach upset.
My Thoughts:
Since I’m a label reader, and didn’t want stomach
upset, I’ve been adding one teaspoon to one
cup of coffee per day for two weeks. I do drink two cups of coffee in the
mornings usually, so the second cup does have a little oil in there, but it’s
miniscule.
Taste:
The MCT Oil doesn’t really have a discernable taste. I
tried it in black coffee first and felt like it may have added just a slight sweetness
to the coffee, but not enough to make me cut back on my sweetener and creamer.
Mouth Feel:
It’s oil, so you are going to feel it in your mouth
and on your lips after you take a drink. It’s not a gross feeling, it’s more of
a slight hydrating of the lips after a sip of coffee feeling.
Scent:
I don’t smell anything when in use this product, but interestingly enough, my cat does. She loves the scent of the Viva Naturals coconut oil I use (I’ll be sharing my thoughts on this product soon!) and even licks my finger if I’ve used it, so seeing her jump up on my desk to sniff at my coffee cup didn’t really surprise me. Side note- Coconut oil is perfectly safe for your cat! I’ll expand on that in my upcoming post.
Additional Tips:
I don’t like warm coffee, can I put it in cold coffee and drinks?
Yes, you can. You can add MCT oil to cold coffee
drinks, smoothies, teas, juices, slushies and more. Remember to add the MCT oil
to your cup or blender first so you can blend it in with the other ingredients
more efficiently. Otherwise, you’ll see little oil bubbles on the top of your
drink.
How to Store MCT Oil:
Viva Naturals suggests storing MCT Oil in a cool,
dark place. I’ve got mine of a lower back shelf of our pantry. I felt it might
be a little to warm in cabinet where I store all our other coffee making
supplies.
Final Thoughts:
I’ve had no stomach issues to date from adding the
organic Viva Naturals MCT oil to my wellness regimen. I’m not doing a full Keto
diet, but I am attempting to lessen my intake of simple carbs and sugars and I
do feel the MCT oil is helping in that regard. I also feel a subtle improvement
in my afternoon energy levels, which is a really good thing. I’m hopeful that
with continued use, I’ll achieve all the health benefits like improved mental
energy, focus and of course, weight management.
