Helpful Homemaking- Garbage Disposals

in , , , , , , , , by Linda A Kinsman, Tuesday, October 29, 2013

Hey dear readers, I’ve been working on a much needed blog post schedule (because winging it just isn’t this planning girls style) and while I won’t be having a theme for every day of the week, I’ve decided to keep this new one: Helpful Homemaking where I will share quick and easy tips for Moms, homes, gardens, cooking, - this will be a grab bag of helpfulness. You can find some of my recent tips here and hereI will also keep a favorite around here: Wordless Wednesday!
Before I get to my quick tip today, I’d love to ask you what would you like to see me write about here on the blog? Please take a quick minute to fill out this survey to help me plan future posts. I promise it’s quick and easy. Thanks!

How to Disinfect and deodorize your garbage disposal and sink drains

This really is super quick and easy.

  1. Take 3 tablespoons Arm and Hammer Baking soda
  2. 1 cup ice cubes
  3. Pour ice down drain. Top with baking soda.
  4. Turn on water (medium-low cold) and turn on garbage disposal.
  5. Let run until the ice cubes stop making the loud noise that scares your cat or dog (about 30 seconds.)
  6. Then run hot water down drain for about 30 seconds and done! Clean smelling drains again. This should last at least a week depending on what you are putting down the garbage disposal.

Now clean the other side of your sink by placing 2 tablespoons of baking soda down the drain and running hot water for about 30 seconds. Your drain is clean.
If you are feeling really industrious, toss another tablespoon of baking soda in your sink lightly, wet it to make a paste and scrub your sink with a non-abrasive cloth. A good paper towel will work in a pinch.

I hope you found this tip helpful. Please come back next week to read my helpful homemaking post and follow along on my Pinterest Board.

Stay Safe with #React Mobile free app

in , , , , , by Linda A Kinsman, Thursday, October 24, 2013

With the holidays rapidly approaching, a lot of us will find ourselves out and about alone, busily rushing from one errand to the next. Safety in parking lots is something that I’m always aware of during the holiday hustle and bustle, but I live in an area that can sometimes lull me into a false sense of security and I forget some safety measures like checking my car before I get in.  So when the owner of React mobile contacted me and introduced their free safety app, I was intrigued and gladly accepted his offer to sponsor this post because safety, not just for me, but my entire family is a priority for everybody I know.

About React Mobile:

React Mobile, a new free app for iPhone and Android that helps enhance personal safety. This app is well suited for families as a safety tool to help parents keep track of their kids.

How does our app work?

React Mobile  helps you turn your smartphone into a powerful lifeline. The app has a “Follow Me” feature, that let’s yourself selected contacts track your whereabouts in real-time whenever you’re concerned for your safety.
Perfect for running or walking alone early in the morning or late at night, keeping track of kids, or meeting a client for the first time, simply touch the “I’m Safe” button to let your contacts know when you’ve arrived at your destination safely.
In an emergency, press the SOS shield on the app to send out a panic alert containing a link to your GPS location to select emergency contacts via text message and email, which can optionally be posted to Facebook and Twitter. Once the SOS alert is activated, you’re automatically prompted to dial 911.
For users outside of North America, the app allows you to choose which country you live in (or are traveling to) from the settings tab and when an SOS alert is triggered, you will be prompted to dial the appropriate emergency authority depending on your geographic location (ex: in the UK the app will prompt a user to dial 112/999 not 911).

React differentiates itself in the following ways:

React Mobile is Free and has an Automatic 911 prompt.

Follow-Me Feature - React Mobile, is a safety tool that you hope you never have to use. We differentiate ourselves by providing users with a safety enhancement feature for everyday use. Our premium “Follow-me” feature allows users to have friends and family track them in real-time. When a user is concerned for their safety but doesn’t want to escalate a potentially harmless situation, they can have their friends and family track them in real-time until they are safe.

International Support: Users also have the ability to choose which country they are visiting (or living in) from our settings tab and when they trigger an SOS alert they will be prompted to dial the appropriate emergency authority depending on where they are (ex: if they are in the UK the app will prompt a user to dial 112 not 911).

Social Network Integration: SOS alerts can be posted to Facebook and Twitter – In the event of an emergency we want users to have the capability to alert as many people as possible. We are differentiating ourselves from the competition by offering users the option to post their emergency alerts to Facebook and Twitter with a link to their location.

The cool Follow Me feature had me downloading the app ASAP. This feature alone is perfect for teens and college kids!

I invite you to learn more about React mobile by visiting their website and liking them on Facebook, then head on over to the iTunes appstore to download the free app or download the free app to your Android via Google Play.

Please make sure you share this app with your family and friends. It takes mere seconds to download the app that will give you and your loves ones piece of mind and a backup plan should they ever need one.

Happy Holidays!

One Way Love by Tullian Tchividjian Giveaway

in , , , , , by Linda A Kinsman, Friday, October 18, 2013

When FLYBY Promotions sent out an email asking their bloggers if we would be interested in reviewing One Way Love, I hesitated to sign up. Sure, I enjoy receiving free books and yes I am a Christian- but I am a tired Christian.
A Christian tired of reading books and devotionals that leave me feeling worse about my sinner self than when I started. So, the email set until I read the promo again. The authors words below changed my mind and I couldn't wait for the books arrival.

 About One Way Love:
Written by: Tullian Tchividjian,  Publisher: David C Cook

Real life is long on law and short on grace—the demands never stop, the failures pile up, and fear sets in. Life requires many things from us—a stable marriage, successful children, a certain quality of life. Anyone living inside the guilt, anxiety, and uncertainty of daily life knows that the weight of life is heavy. We are all in need of some relief. Bestselling author Tullian Tchividjian is convinced our world needs a fresh encounter with grace.

About the Author:

William Graham Tullian Tchividjian (pronounced cha-vi-jin) is the Senior Pastor of Coral Ridge Presbyterian Church in Ft. Lauderdale, Fl. A Florida native, Tullian is the grandson of Billy and Ruth Graham. He is a visiting professor of theology at Reformed Theological Seminary, and a contributing editor to Leadership JournalHe is an ordained minister in Presbyterian Church of America. He is the author of six books; including the best seller, Jesus + Nothing = Everything  that won Christianity Today’s 2011 book of the year. He travels extensively, speaking at conferences throughout the U.S.

My Review:

Never and I really mean NEVER have I started writing down passages I wanted to share from a book while still reading the Introduction! Tullian’s words are so authentic and needed. Not just for me, but this whole tired world.
In fact, he called the church out for some of the very reasons my husband and I made the hard decision to leave our home church last year. We would leave services not feeling uplifted with God’s good word and Grace, rather, we left feeling like we weren’t doing enough to serve and that we were somehow second rate Christians because we aren't perfect at being Christian people.
Tullian has a name for “the perfect people” (or all those trying hard to make it seem life is perfect):

He says performancism is the mindset that equates our identity and value directly to our performance and accomplishments. Performancism casts achievement not as something we do or don’t do but something we are or aren’t.

Wow. That is a powerful statement for a whole lot of people. People you may see on Facebook with their perfect life, kids, marriages, vacations, jobs and their faith and volunteerism. Don’t these people make you feel tired just watching them? I bet they are exhausted! This book is for them just as much as it is for the more grounded sinners such as me.

Tullian humbly invites you in to this book. It is not a preachy do this not that book. I feel lightness in my heart from reading it, knowing I am not alone in my disenchantment with my church and my Christianity. Tullian’s message is that God’s good Grace- His One Way Love covers me.
I will return to this book often I’m sure. I will buy copies for my Christian friends for gifts, it’s that good! I invite you to visit One Way Love  HERE .

The Giveaway:

One lucky reader will win a copy of One Way Love (paperback)! I hope this book blesses you as it has me. No purchase is necessary to enter. Open to US residents 18 or older.

Good luck!

October finds me Pink and Blue

in , , , , , , , , , , by Linda A Kinsman, Thursday, October 17, 2013

To say this has not been a “normal” October for most Americans is probably an understatement what with our government squabbling and causing all manner of hardships all across our nation. I am in no way a political debater or writer, so I will just say, I am glad EVERYBODY got to go back to work today and I hope you are enjoying some of nature's beauty that October brings.

I wanted to take time out today to share a part of my “other” job with you. Near the end of August, I rejoined Avon, (you can read more about my Avon story here) and in these short few weeks, I have reconnected with old customers and friends in such a positive way.

Several have told me they missed shopping with me and talking with me. Sure, everybody knows Avon and likes their products- but when you have ladies telling you that it just wasn’t the same as shopping with me; I cannot tell you how empowering and uplifting their comments are!

This leads me to why October finds me Pink and Blue.

Avon’s Breast Cancer Crusade is world renowned and I take pride in being a little fish in a big pond of caring and giving individuals who work tirelessly to help find a cure.
I invite you to please visit Avon’s Breast Cancer Crusade page to learn about ways you can get involved. I would love it if you visited my Pink page and see if there is a product or two you would like to purchase to do your part.

Now I would like to talk about the Blue part of my October.

Did you know that October is also Speak out against Domestic Violence month?

Speak Out Against
Domestic Violence

As a Mom of two daughters, I find that as they get older the fear of dating abuse and or sexual violence becomes a tough topic that I have to address. I “lightly” touched on the subject with my 14 year old and will cross that same bridge with my 10 year old when I feel she is ready.

What is Domestic Violence?

According to Avon: "Domestic violence is a pattern of abuse with the goal of establishing or maintaining power and control over the victim. It can happen occasionally or continuously and often worsens over time. Domestic violence includes physical, sexual, mental, and financial abuse. It knows no boundaries: Domestic violence can affect anyone, regardless of income, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, or religion.
To help bring this issue out of the shadows, the Avon Foundation for Women launched Speak Out Against Domestic Violence, an initiative to build awareness, educate, and improve prevention and direct service programs. Through the end of 2012, in the U.S. alone, we have provided more than $33 million for the domestic violence cause."
Parents: Especially Moms! If you have a teen or older tween, perhaps it's time for you to have this talk too.  Don’t wait too long! Kids are learning “stuff” at earlier ages than most of us did. Let’s help keep our kids safe by learning all we can about this silent problem.
Please visit Avon’s Speak out Against Violence Campaign and see how you can help this important cause here.  I would love it if you stopped by my Blue page to see if you would like to purchase any of our special empowerment pieces.

I'm ordering myself this beautiful Butterfly Umbrella.  It's only $10.00 and it will help fund help. 100% of net profits ($6.62) will be donated to the Avon Foundation for programs dedicated to ending violence against women. And just so you know, Avon Reps. do not earn commissions on any of the Pink or Blue products. :)

Do you need help?

Four little words that to some may be very hard to answer. But, If you are reading this and you are a victim of domestic violence, no matter how small: please reach out to somebody.  Don’t stay silent. Please. After reading the study results Avon conducted in September of this year, silence is not the answer! Avon wants to help. We Avon Reps. want to help. If you visit this page, there are lists of help line numbers in categories to help you.

For Teens:

Love doesn't hurt. Love is Respect.

I know you think parents and adults just don't get it and hey, maybe we don't, but we want to- Try talking to us! If you can't yet, please visit this interactive page full of quizzes and resources that may help you find your voice.

Be Safe not Silent

Lastly, if you are reading this and think Avon might be a good fit for you too, I invite you to join my Avon family.

Thank you in advance for helping me and Avon support these very worthy causes this month and throughout the year. Do you have a charity or cause to share? Please feel free to let me know in your comment.

Lunch is on me and Chicken of the Sea Giveaway

in , , , , , by Linda A Kinsman, Friday, October 11, 2013

Thank you Chicken of the Sea for sending me a free lunch pack containing the products mentioned below to try and share. I appreciate you and as always, all opinions are 100% my own.

As a busy work at home Mom of two, getting my family out the door quickly and with a healthy lunch is always a priority. I pack 3 lunches (my husband gets the love from home treatment too) 5 days a week, so having a quick and healthy product like Chicken of the Sea To Go cups are a lifesaver!

About Chicken of the Sea to go cups:

Chicken of the Sea’s popular To Go Cups are available in Chunk Light Tuna, Albacore Tuna, Tuna Salad and Pink Salmon. To Go Cups are ready to eat, no draining required with only 70-80 calories each, these cups are perfect for a quick lunch or snack at school, in the office or on the road.
Available in easy-to-open, 2.8-ounce cups, Chicken of the Sea’s tuna and salmon are wild-caught and a natural source of heart-healthy omega-3 fatty acids and protein, and are low in fat and calories. The cups come in packages of two.
“According to the 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans, consumers should eat at least eight ounces of seafood each week,” said registered dietician Sharon McNerney. “Chicken of the Sea’s To Go Cups makes it even more convenient for people to eat the recommended amount of seafood.”

You can learn more by visiting Chicken of the Sea on Facebook, Twitter or Pinterest .  To find a grocery store in your area that carries the To Go Cups, use Chicken of the Sea’s  Product Locator

My Review:

The Tuna Salad cups were the first to go. My youngest daughter and husband gave them a try. They found this Tuna Salad had a unique, “zesty” taste they liked. They were both reading the labels to discover what the secret ingredient might be. One thing they didn’t find was Mayo, which makes this Tuna Salad healthier than most and easy to grab and go without the need for refrigeration.
I loved using the Albacore Tuna and Pink Salmon for a quick salad. I’m the queen of the leftover lunch, so adding these products to left over salad or pasta made for an easy and tasty lunch.
The Chunk Light Tuna made a great after school snack for my oldest daughter, who always gets home starving and looking for a quick but healthy snack. She loved having the Chicken of the Sea To Go cups handy. She grabbed one and some crackers and she was a happy snacker.
We Loved the Chicken of the Sea to Go cups and will buy them again, soon actually! Every  pack comes with a 50 cents off coupon, so saving is easy. Plus, if you join their Mermaid club, you will get a coupon mailed to you in your birthday month.

The Giveaway:

Lunch is on me and Chicken of the Sea. Enter to win all 4 To Go cup varieties (shown above) and this cute cross backpack.
Entering is easy using the Rafflecopter form below. No purchase is necessary to win. Open to U.S. residents 18 or older.  Please read disclosure for full details.

Good luck!

Wordless Wednesday- Foul!

in , , , by Linda A Kinsman, Wednesday, October 09, 2013
Last month we spent the day at the Tennessee State Fair. A fun day was had by all and I wanted to give another nod to all the people who brought their animals. The one thing people may not tell you about Fowls is that they can get stinky! See what I did there? Foul vs. Fowl? ;)

How I got home without one of these cuties is a mystery.

Check out this head dress!

Hey there big fella.

Just plain Stunning!

Happy HUMP Day! Okay, I couldn't resist. My girls do the commercial total justice, me... well, I'm a work in progress. :)

Do you have a Wordless Wednesday post up? Share your link in a comment so I can stop by and see what's going on in your world.
