Earlier this week, I found myself covering my plants due to a freeze warning in our area. I knew it was coming because I’d been reading the 2025 edition of The Old Farmer’s Almanac, which states our last freeze date is April 15, 2025. If you’re ready to welcome spring gardening, read about The Old Farmer’s Almanac's three handy gardening books.

Spring Gardening Has Arrived!

3 handy books for spring gardening

I’d like to thank The Old Farmer’s Almanac for the complimentary copies of the books showcased in today’s post. No other compensation was given.

About The Old Farmer’s Almanac 2025 Edition- Paperback/288 Pages:

The Old Farmer’s Almanac 2025 Edition

The Old Farmer’s Almanac has been making every day special since 1792, and, with the 2025 edition, it continues this tradition in its inimitable fashion. Trusted by generations from all walks of life for its honesty and accuracy, the Almanac delivers fun facts, predictions, feature articles, and advice across many interest areas to readers who live—or aspire to live—the country lifestyle, with the intent of helping them to make better decisions.

As a calendar of the heavens, it provides detailed daily astronomical data (Sun/Moon rise/set times, length of day), tide times, and planet/star sightings for every sky watcher, from novice to expert.

As a calendar of the year, it presents annual and seasonal events, holidays, anniversaries, and timely trivia; astrological “Best Days” and cycles; and much more for the curious and the conscientious.

As a time capsule of the year, it contains cultural trends; weather forecasts and conditions; articles on interesting topics such as gardening, home arts and remedies, amusements and contests, history, husbandry, nature, cooking and recipes, folklore, pets, and sports; and more—all in a way that is “useful, with a pleasant degree of humor.”

My Thoughts:

My grandparents always had The Old Farmer’s Almanac in their gardening shed, and I loved flipping through the pages, looking at all the different flowers, produce, farm animals, and the ads. In the 2025 edition, not much has changed in my recollection, except the photos are of much better quality.

I’ve enjoyed reading different topics. I started in our gardening zone of the Southeast, where I learned our month-by-month average temperatures, frost and growing season, and normal weather patterns.

There’s a guide for tides, moons, fishing, and even an Astrology “Best Days For” Monthly Guide.

For instance, the best days to bake in May are the 1st, 2nd, 29th, and 30th. I’m not sure how the almanac knows this stuff, but I’m going to try baking a Bundt cake on one of these days in May to see if the outcome is better than my previous attempts.

  • Folklore
  • Proverbs and witticisms

My Thoughts:

This is by far one of the prettiest journals I’ve owned. I adore paper products like journals, stationery, and cards, so this beautifully illustrated gardening journal truly is a delight to use.

With quotes and garden wisdom interspersed among the lovely lined sheets, I’m going to enjoy spending time amongst these pages. This journal has brought this love back to the forefront, so don’t be surprised if you see more journal and paper posts here on the blog.

This gardening journal would make a lovely gift for anyone who enjoys gardening. Here’s the link to The Old Farmer’s Almanac Garden Journal, where you can learn more about it and purchase a copy.

And last, but certainly not least, I’m very excited to share this book. If you are ready to dig into gardening this spring, then container gardening might be part of your plan.

“Short on space, time, or money or just want to garden in a new way? Container gardening helps you to explore your love of plants as well as “grow” your green thumb knowledge.”\

Topics Covered Include:

  1. Specific advice for growing miniature, bush, and other small-space vegetables, as well as herbs and fruit.
  2. Profiles of singularly sensational ornamental plants.
  3. Profiles of “thriller,” “spiller,” and “filler” plants, plus how to arrange them based on colors, textures, shapes, and more.
  4. Help in choosing proper containers, with tips on how to clean both pots and tools.
  5. The most desirable growing medium, how to make your own optimum mix, and how much you’ll need.
  6. Advice on providing sun, water, and fertilizer, plus what to do if you’ve overdone it.
  7. How to deter diseases and pests (and eliminate them if need be!).
  8. Pages for recording your experiences and observations.
  9. Helpful anecdotes from fellow gardeners.

My Thoughts:

Walk into any nursery or garden center, and you’ll see them. Beautiful containers full of seasonal blooms and greenery. If you’re like me, you think, why would I buy a premade one when half the fun is picking my supplies and blooms? Ha! The joke is on me! I’ve tried and failed many times to recreate these masterpieces, but that’s about to change because I’m armed with this handy container garden help.

Thanks to its in-depth approach, I’ll be able to pick my Spillers, Thrillers and Spillers - the trifecta of beautiful containers like a pro! This book is a delight to thumb through. I’ve enjoyed sitting on my front porch while it rained and dreaming of what I’ll put in this pot, or that hanging basket.

There are even helpful resources for growing edibles and herbs in containers, which will come in handy this growing season. You can learn more about this wonderful garden resource at the above link.

The Takeaway:

The Old Farmer’s Almanac was founded in 1792, and is still going strong over 230 years later because it provides us with helpful information about the world we live in. These books, though geared towards farmers and gardeners, are also fun to have for fishermen, hunters, hikers, and any outdoor enthusiast. I found these three handy books fascinating and will keep them in mind for gift options.
