As soon as I read about The Six Triple Eight, which takes place in England in 1945, in Netflix’s Queue magazine I knew it would be a film I’d enjoy and I was correct. It’s a dramatic story of how our first-ever Women’s Army Corps unit of color chose to do the impossible- get the mail to and from our soldiers moving again. They felt that by delivering these letters, they were delivering hope at a time when the soldiers and their loved ones needed it most.
As I was watching the Women’s Army Corps take on this herculean task of unbagging, sorting, and keeping track of the mail that had been stored in hangars and warehouses in England; I was pulled into the film through the sets, which brought the late 1940s and early 1950s to life. The sets and costumes were realistic so that you did feel like you’d stepped back in time.
Kerry Washington’s portrayal of Major Adams is stellar but like a true battalion, all of the women of the 668th bring strong and moving performances to this film and shine a light on the importance of their mission- to address a three-year mail backlog. Which culminated in them sorting seventeen pieces of mail, during wartime conditions! And managed to get it done ahead of schedule. You can’t help but feel deeply while watching The Six Triple Eight. You can stream it on Netflix.
