Cast: Danny DeVito, Andie MacDowell, Wilmer Valderrama, Lucy DeVito, Antonella Rose
Film Synopsis:
“A delightful family movie that takes place in the breathtaking beauty of the Dolomite Mountain range in Italy, A Sudden Case of Christmas follows an American couple (Lucy DeVito and Valderrama) taking their daughter Claire (Rose) to her grandfather Lawrence’s (DeVito) grand hotel in Italy to tell her they're breaking up.
Claire insists on celebrating Christmas in August to bring the family together, leading to unexpected complications. Claire’s other grandparents (MacDowell and José Zúñiga) arrive to join the festivities, bringing secrets and adding further intricacy.
A Sudden Case of Christmas captures the essence of love, family, traditions, and takes viewers on a journey full of laughs and emotions that will tug at their heartstrings.”
My Thoughts:
If you are a Danny Devito fan like I am, be prepared to love him as grandfather Lawerence. He is in his element in this role and he and his granddaughter have a true and believable connection. More than his actual daughter, Lucy DeVito? In some scenes, yes! Mainly because Claire is such a charismatic ten year old, she will have you rooting for her from the very beginning of the film.
The ensemble cast work well together, and really bring out the best and worst! in each other, when Claire hatches the idea of celebrating Christmas in the middle of summer and her grandfather happily agrees, because they both believe “as long as there is love, there is Christmas!”
The outdoor scenes are breathtaking as you might imagine in a film in the Dolomite mountains of Italy. There’s laugh out loud moments, scenes where the grownups reveal several missteps and complete lack of communication, which makes you want to say “just tell them!” to the screen on multiple occasions as Claire and her grandfather try in vain to get her parents back together. Did they succeed? You’ll have to watch the film for yourself to find out!
