What do you think of when you hear the name Ferrari? For most of us, the answer is beautiful red fast race cars. And you’ll see plenty of these beauties in Micheal Mann’s Ferrari, coming to theaters on Christmas Day. I received a press screener from Neon, and let me just say you may want to add this going to see this film to your holiday plans.

Ferrari Synopsis: From Neon:

“Ferrari is set during the summer of 1957. Behind the spectacle and danger of 1950’s Formula 1, ex-racer, Enzo Ferrari, is in crisis. Bankruptcy stalks the company he and his wife, Laura, built from nothing ten years earlier.

Their tempestuous marriage struggles with the mourning for their one son. Ferrari struggles with the acknowledgment of another. His drivers’ lust to win pushes them out to the edge. He wagers all in a roll of the dice on one race, the treacherous 1,000-mile race across Italy, the iconic Mille Miglia.”

My Thoughts:

I’ve warmed up to car and racing films since becoming a film critic and watching films like  Ford VS. Ferrari and 2022’s Lamborgini. Ferrari is an enjoyable film, not just for the racing aspect, which is exciting, but also for the incredible story it paints of Enzo Ferrari and his family, friends, and lovers. In Ferrari, we see the financial struggles, the very real life and death twists and turns of car racing, and how Enzo embodied his sentiment that “all of us are racers”.

The settings in Italy are so lovely, they made me want to book a flight there as soon as possible. Without giving too much away, I will say that Penelope Cruz is phenomenal in her role as the bitter, long-suffering wife and Adam Driver is Adam. I’ve yet to see him in a role he didn’t completely own. He is Enzo Ferrari!

The Takeaway:

This is an engrossing film that I think would be perfect for a date, or to go see with friends. I don’t think this film is a good choice for children, and agree with the R rating. My husband and I really enjoyed it!
