The countdown to the most wonderful time of the year has finally arrived! My fall and holiday baking season will truly begin now and requests for my family’s favorite pies, cobblers, loaves of bread and cookies coming in. I’ve already baked a Pumpkin Pie, brownies and a dozen cookies. While I love having sweet treats on hand, I want to be aware of my sugar intake and theirs. Some of my close family members had or have prediabetes and type 2 Diabetes, so I’ve learned the importance of being aware of your blood sugar levels throughout the day and how certain foods and drinks can help minimize blood sugar spikes now and throughout the holiday season.

Surprising causes of Blood Sugar Spikes:

You may be thinking to yourself; this post isn’t for me because I don’t have Diabetes, or problems with my blood sugar levels and that could very well be true if you are eating healthy meals, exercising, getting enough sleep, aren’t stressed and are properly hydrated.  If you are saying, yes, this is me, then way to go! You are doing all the right things. BUT- if you are like me and were surprised to learn that stress, certain foods, and hydration can factor into blood sugar levels, please stay with me. I’m not a medical professional; I’m just an average Mom who wants to make sure I take good care of myself in the season of stress and hurriedness by being mindful of these things. If you have any health questions, please ask the pharmacist at your local Sam's Club.

I’m adding a daily Meal Replacement Drink to my routine this Holiday Season:

I’m usually all for eating my calories, not drinking them, but in an effort to be truly transparent here, I don’t eat a lot of breakfast foods, nor do I eat what most would consider a “proper” lunch. I’m a grazer, preferring to nosh on an apple or orange here, some chips and hummus there and call that breakfast and lunch.

Or, I’ll simply power through lunch until I’m starving and my blood sugar level has dropped. Then, I find myself standing in the kitchen grabbing any quick convenience food that usually is loaded with sugar!

That won’t happen anymore now that I’ve stocked my fridge and pantry with Glucerna CarbSteady shakes. I got a case of the Rich Chocolate flavor at Sam’s Club while I was doing our bi-weekly shopping there. If you have pre-diabetes or are diabetic, please work with your healthcare provider to determine the best product options for you.

Why I Choose Glucerna over other nutritional shakes:

  • Taste:

I had the opportunity to try a Glucerna Rich Chocolate shake sample at my local Sam’s Club and was surprised at just how good it tasted. It doesn’t have a diet shake taste at all! They named this shake correctly because I think it tastes like thick chocolate milk.  Glucerna is Gluten-Free and suitable for lactose intolerance so my daughter can drink them as well. She may prefer the Homemade Vanilla flavor shakes, so I’ll grab some of those next time.

  • Nutrition and Hydration:

They are good for you. If you replace one meal or snack with a Glucerna shake you’ll be getting 10 grams of protein, 180 calories and 138 mg choline per serving, plus the added bonus of adding more fluid to your day. We all may think we are drinking enough water to stay hydrated, but in the colder months, we have to really be aware of our fluid intake.

These shakes have a unique blend of slow release carbohydrates which helps minimize sugar spikes. If you’ve ever eaten a meal and felt hungry soon after, or maybe a little shaky, you may have been experiencing a blood sugar spike like I do. The 10 grams of protein and 3 grams of fiber in each shake will help keep those sugar crashes at bay.

  • Convenience:

Armed with these easy to pour and sip shakes, I feel confident I will be maintaining my sugar levels better. I can enjoy a shake chilled over ice with a piece of fruit, or on days where I’m running errands, I can I can just toss a shake in my purse and I’m set because they taste good straight from the bottle as well.
