October finds me Pink and Blue

in , , , , , , , , , , by Linda A Kinsman, Thursday, October 17, 2013

To say this has not been a “normal” October for most Americans is probably an understatement what with our government squabbling and causing all manner of hardships all across our nation. I am in no way a political debater or writer, so I will just say, I am glad EVERYBODY got to go back to work today and I hope you are enjoying some of nature's beauty that October brings.

I wanted to take time out today to share a part of my “other” job with you. Near the end of August, I rejoined Avon, (you can read more about my Avon story here) and in these short few weeks, I have reconnected with old customers and friends in such a positive way.

Several have told me they missed shopping with me and talking with me. Sure, everybody knows Avon and likes their products- but when you have ladies telling you that it just wasn’t the same as shopping with me; I cannot tell you how empowering and uplifting their comments are!

This leads me to why October finds me Pink and Blue.

Avon’s Breast Cancer Crusade is world renowned and I take pride in being a little fish in a big pond of caring and giving individuals who work tirelessly to help find a cure.
I invite you to please visit Avon’s Breast Cancer Crusade page to learn about ways you can get involved. I would love it if you visited my Pink page and see if there is a product or two you would like to purchase to do your part.

Now I would like to talk about the Blue part of my October.

Did you know that October is also Speak out against Domestic Violence month?

Speak Out Against
Domestic Violence

As a Mom of two daughters, I find that as they get older the fear of dating abuse and or sexual violence becomes a tough topic that I have to address. I “lightly” touched on the subject with my 14 year old and will cross that same bridge with my 10 year old when I feel she is ready.

What is Domestic Violence?

According to Avon: "Domestic violence is a pattern of abuse with the goal of establishing or maintaining power and control over the victim. It can happen occasionally or continuously and often worsens over time. Domestic violence includes physical, sexual, mental, and financial abuse. It knows no boundaries: Domestic violence can affect anyone, regardless of income, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, or religion.
To help bring this issue out of the shadows, the Avon Foundation for Women launched Speak Out Against Domestic Violence, an initiative to build awareness, educate, and improve prevention and direct service programs. Through the end of 2012, in the U.S. alone, we have provided more than $33 million for the domestic violence cause."
Parents: Especially Moms! If you have a teen or older tween, perhaps it's time for you to have this talk too.  Don’t wait too long! Kids are learning “stuff” at earlier ages than most of us did. Let’s help keep our kids safe by learning all we can about this silent problem.
Please visit Avon’s Speak out Against Violence Campaign and see how you can help this important cause here.  I would love it if you stopped by my Blue page to see if you would like to purchase any of our special empowerment pieces.

I'm ordering myself this beautiful Butterfly Umbrella.  It's only $10.00 and it will help fund help. 100% of net profits ($6.62) will be donated to the Avon Foundation for programs dedicated to ending violence against women. And just so you know, Avon Reps. do not earn commissions on any of the Pink or Blue products. :)

Do you need help?

Four little words that to some may be very hard to answer. But, If you are reading this and you are a victim of domestic violence, no matter how small: please reach out to somebody.  Don’t stay silent. Please. After reading the study results Avon conducted in September of this year, silence is not the answer! Avon wants to help. We Avon Reps. want to help. If you visit this page, there are lists of help line numbers in categories to help you.

For Teens:

Love doesn't hurt. Love is Respect.

I know you think parents and adults just don't get it and hey, maybe we don't, but we want to- Try talking to us! If you can't yet, please visit this interactive page full of quizzes and resources that may help you find your voice.

Be Safe not Silent

Lastly, if you are reading this and think Avon might be a good fit for you too, I invite you to join my Avon family.

Thank you in advance for helping me and Avon support these very worthy causes this month and throughout the year. Do you have a charity or cause to share? Please feel free to let me know in your comment.

Lunch is on me and Chicken of the Sea Giveaway

in , , , , , by Linda A Kinsman, Friday, October 11, 2013

Thank you Chicken of the Sea for sending me a free lunch pack containing the products mentioned below to try and share. I appreciate you and as always, all opinions are 100% my own.

As a busy work at home Mom of two, getting my family out the door quickly and with a healthy lunch is always a priority. I pack 3 lunches (my husband gets the love from home treatment too) 5 days a week, so having a quick and healthy product like Chicken of the Sea To Go cups are a lifesaver!

About Chicken of the Sea to go cups:

MyWAHMPlan.com

Chicken of the Sea’s popular To Go Cups are available in Chunk Light Tuna, Albacore Tuna, Tuna Salad and Pink Salmon. To Go Cups are ready to eat, no draining required with only 70-80 calories each, these cups are perfect for a quick lunch or snack at school, in the office or on the road.
Available in easy-to-open, 2.8-ounce cups, Chicken of the Sea’s tuna and salmon are wild-caught and a natural source of heart-healthy omega-3 fatty acids and protein, and are low in fat and calories. The cups come in packages of two.
“According to the 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans, consumers should eat at least eight ounces of seafood each week,” said registered dietician Sharon McNerney. “Chicken of the Sea’s To Go Cups makes it even more convenient for people to eat the recommended amount of seafood.”

You can learn more by visiting Chicken of the Sea on Facebook, Twitter or Pinterest .  To find a grocery store in your area that carries the To Go Cups, use Chicken of the Sea’s  Product Locator

My Review:

MyWAHMPlan.com

The Tuna Salad cups were the first to go. My youngest daughter and husband gave them a try. They found this Tuna Salad had a unique, “zesty” taste they liked. They were both reading the labels to discover what the secret ingredient might be. One thing they didn’t find was Mayo, which makes this Tuna Salad healthier than most and easy to grab and go without the need for refrigeration.
I loved using the Albacore Tuna and Pink Salmon for a quick salad. I’m the queen of the leftover lunch, so adding these products to left over salad or pasta made for an easy and tasty lunch.
The Chunk Light Tuna made a great after school snack for my oldest daughter, who always gets home starving and looking for a quick but healthy snack. She loved having the Chicken of the Sea To Go cups handy. She grabbed one and some crackers and she was a happy snacker.
We Loved the Chicken of the Sea to Go cups and will buy them again, soon actually! Every  pack comes with a 50 cents off coupon, so saving is easy. Plus, if you join their Mermaid club, you will get a coupon mailed to you in your birthday month.

Wordless Wednesday- Foul!

Last month we spent the day at the Tennessee State Fair. A fun day was had by all and I wanted to give another nod to all the people who brought their animals. The one thing people may not tell you about Fowls is that they can get stinky! See what I did there? Foul vs. Fowl? ;)

Let’s talk Laundry and Sorting

in , , , , , , by Linda A Kinsman, Friday, October 04, 2013

As I do most every morning, I walked into my laundry room to check if I left a load of laundry in the washer overnight.  My washer was empty, the dryer wasn’t.
No big news flash there, but while I’m standing there contemplating the next load (you know, should it be darks or lights or whites) I noticed a funky odor wafting around.

Laundry rooms should smell clean and fresh, not like a sweaty sock!

My eyes immediately go to the white’s basket. Even though it’s only half full, I start sorting. Actually, I double sort my whites. I make two piles; one is only socks and underwear, the other towels and linen. My Mama didn’t teach me to sort clothes like this and I’m betting your Mama didn’t either. But I think you'll be a white's double sorter too after you read this.

MyWAHMPlan.com

So why the double sort?

One word: Poop.

Yes! Poop!  I saw this story on ABC News a couple of years ago and it has stuck with me. According to Charles Gerba, a professor of microbiology at the University of Arizona

"If you wash a load of just underwear, there will be about 100 million E. coli in the wash water, and they can be transmitted to the next load of laundry," Gerba said. “There’s about a tenth of a gram of poop in the average pair of underwear," he added. Fecal matter can carry a number of different germs, including the hepatitis A virus, norovirus, rotavirus, salmonella and E. coli.
Gross, right?
Thinking our detergent was enough to keep the germs at bay is wrong. Thinking my hot water was hot enough to kill the nasty’s was wrong too.
So here’s what I do. I wash the underwear and socks in hot water with bleach first. Then, I clean the washer with a spray of diluted bleach water and let it sit for about 5 minutes. Then I wash the towels in hot water and bleach. Now I’m not spreading germs and poop and all those other gross things mentioned above.
It’s imbedded in my brain to double sort my whites and clean my washer now and I’m teaching my girls to do the same.  I know old habits die hard, but if you could visualize drying your face with a dirty sock, you will be doing the double sort too.
You’ve just read the first in my new series of homemaking tips. I will share a new tip each week. Please let me know your thoughts and what topics you’d like to see me cover in comments.
Thanks!
