We had a lot of family activities at the end of July, which happens every year. It’s such a busy time for everyone, so I figured it would be okay for me to take a little blogging break. Now, I’m back feeling refreshed and excited to share one of our recent outings to a local farm.

Family Farming In Spring Hill, TN.

The Old Stone Creamery, Spring Hill TN.

Local farms dot the landscape in Nashville and its suburbs, which adds to the charm of our area. Head south for about 25 minutes, depending on traffic, of course, and you’ll find yourself in beautiful farm country. This picturesque, rural lifestyle suits us just fine, and that’s why we bought out here many years ago.

Just shy of 3 years ago, The Old Stone Creamery opened, and try as we may, we’d miss them being open until one recent Saturday afternoon. We hopped in the car, drove up Sugar Ridge, we spotted the business road sign and lo and behold, the welcome signs were out!

Because this creamery is on a winding country road, with the driveway on the left, you’ve got to be on the lookout for their sign and the old creamery, or you’ll drive right past it. Thankfully, we didn’t pass it by and truly enjoyed our visit.  You can’t miss the old creamery either, because of its beauty. It still stands on the property with a little babbling stream in front, which was very picturesque with a brooding sky above.

About The Old Stone Creamery

Six-generation farmer Laura Purtle and her sister, Susan Martin, dreamed of opening a store to showcase and share their farm’s products, cheese, and beef. Their husbands are involved too, making this a true family operation.

Their farm isn’t just any old farm. The Clerburne Jersey Farm has the oldest milking Jersey herd in the nation, and got its start in 1872. I was suprised and delighted to learn the history of this farm in nearby Maury County TN. They even had this old county map that highlights the farm displayed in the store.

A Family Dream Come True:

Their dream of bottling their milk came to fruition in the fall of 2024. Their milk is low-temperature pasteurized, non-homogenized from Jersey Herds.

Since we’d just bought milk at the grocery store, we didn’t buy milk on our visit, but we will stop by soon to get some. We opted to try their cheddar cheese, which has a fantastic flavor and was buttery smooth. Perfect for eating with crackers and veggies.

They had an assortment of local canned goods like jams, jellies, apple butters, and vegetables from other local farms. They also had bags of popcorn, pecans, cookie mixes, and more, all displayed in glass jars. If you come hungry, don’t worry, you’ll have plenty of food and drink options.

There’s also several displays of homemade wooden home decor, cards, candles, and more. I think they’d make perfect gifts and will keep them in mind for a quick, heartfelt, homey gift.

The girl working on our visit was friendly and open to answering any questions. She told us the food and gifts change with the seasons, so we’re excited to go back, grab some milk and cheese, and see what’s on the shelves in September.

Check Hours Before You Come:

The only downside to this lovely shop is the hours. They aren’t open on Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, and have limited hours of operation on the other days of the week. See the above sign for exact hours.

The Old Stone Creamery is located at 2301 Sugar Ridge Road, Spring Hill, TN 37174. They offer tours, date nights in the orchard, farm photo sessions, and more. Visit their website to learn more about booking.

The Takeaway:

Century Farm Sign

If you enjoy road trips, country roads, day dates, farms, and their products, history and a feeling of nostalgia, why not add a trip to The Old Stone Creamery, a Century Farm,  to your list of fun things to do? It’s an easy drive in from Nashville and the surrounding areas. You can pick up a few things from their farm to share at your table, so in a way, you accepted their invitation to eat at their table.
