April in Tennessee is a sight to behold, especially if you love seeing trees in bloom. I have wanted to take the three-hour drive from Nashville to Knoxville for the annual Dogwood Trails and Gardens tour in all four corners of Knoxville. Armed with the 100 Things to Do in Knoxville before you Die book, my husband and I have plenty of options for a splendid day or weekend trip right at our fingertips. Read on to learn more about this fun resource.

Let's go to Knoxville!

About 100 Things to Do in Knoxville before you Die by Kristen Combs:

Publisher: Reedy Press, Pat of the 100 Things to do before you Die series/160 pages

Knoxville, Tennessee’s third largest city, is nestled in the foothills of the Smoky Mountains, a place my family and I have enjoyed visiting many times. Knoxville, with its small-town feel and stunning views, can sometimes feel like a pass-through place, not the destination. This s book changes that!

100 Things to Do in Knoxville before you Die offers visitors and locals a diverse checklist of adventures and insider knowledge to construct the perfect itinerary for your trip.

Knoxville can’t be defined by just one thing and I think that’s what keeps folks visiting! It’s hard to beat a trip to the Smoky Mountains, but Knoxville offers many outdoor venue options like the Knoxville Urban Wilderness just minutes from downtown's heart. This spectacular 1,000 acres space boasts various parks, a nature center, historic sites, dramatic quarries, adventure playgrounds, and more than 50 miles of trails and greenways spread throughout KUW. This would be one of our first stops after we did the Dogwood Garden tour, with the local organization Dogwood Arts.

Knoxville is an outdoor paradise with the aforementioned outdoor areas, but they also have a fantastic zoo, and you can easily access the Tennessee River for paddling and boating, again just minutes from downtown.

Downtown Knoxville

As I was reading through this book, it struck me that even though I’ve seen the Tennessee Theatre sign while driving through, or walking in downtown Knoxville, I’ve never attended a performance inside the official state theatre of Tennessee and that needs to be rectified when we come to see the Dogwoods in bloom.

Dogwood Trees in Bloom

The Tennessee Theatre opened in 1928 and was an opulent “movie palace”, in a Spanish-Moorish design style according to page 34 of 100 Things to do in Knoxville before You Die. Today, the theatre boasts multi-use programming like classical music, dance, vintage films, broadway shows, and operas. There’s even a fun Mighty Musical Monday, a free concert performance featuring the Mighty Wurlitzer organ. It’s one of the few organs still in its original location.

My Thoughts:

One of the most helpful parts of this book, in my opinion, is the Suggested Itineraries. Starting on page 137, author Kristen Combs has made concise itineraries for Downtown, Festivals, Natural World, Worth the Drive, and more. Examples you’ll find listed for

Downtown Itineraries include:

  • Behold the Power of an Urban Waterfall at High Falls, page 61
  • Stand at the site of famed arrest at Susan B. Anthony’s House, page 88
  • Meditate to music from across the ages at Compline, page 44

And many more options.

The Takeaway:

The author of 100 Things to Do in Knoxville before You Die, Kristen Combs,  is the director of communications and social strategies for Visit Knoxville, the official convention and visitors bureau for Knoxville, so she knows this city and county well. This book is loaded with lots of handy tips on everything you could think to add to a bucket list trip to Knoxville. I highly recommend this small, but mighty paperback. I invite you to learn more by visiting Reedy Press.
