Have you been enjoying the crisp fall air this week? I sure have, even though that meant covering my plants and bringing in my herbs a little sooner than I normally do. It’s all part of the growing cycle here on our little homeplace. Notice, I call it “homeplace” not “homestead”, so why am I reviewing a book all about starting a homestead? Because I felt it was time for me to understand what it takes to set up a homestead and if it’s right for us. Do you have questions about homesteading? Read on to see if this book can help.

About The First-Time Homesteader by Jessica Sowards/Published 9/20/22, by Cool Springs Press/Paperback 192 pages
My Tomatoes:
In the introduction of The First-Time Homesteader book, Jessica shares that she’s always had the desire for a homestead, sharing how as a child, she dreamed of horseback rides, a farm with a big red ban, yard birds and neat garden rows. Honestly, her dreams of a homestead and my dream of a homeplace sound similar, except, I didn’t want to raise animals to eat, and I still don’t, but I found the chapters on those topics interesting. It helped me grasp what it takes to have that type of homestead. In essence, it aligned with my homemaker's heart!
Jessica has an easy to read and digest approach I found welcoming and that was her aim. She set out to right a book that is an earnest, authentic, and kindhearted welcome to the world of homesteading. All of the lovely photographers in the book were taken by Jessica, which spoke to my nature loving soul.
This book is Jessica’s guide to help us through the process of:
- Setting up your property for success, no matter the size, large or small
- Welcoming animals to your homestead: chickens, cows, rabbits and goats
- Small scale animal husbandry
- Beginning a home dairy for fresh milk, butter and cheese making
- Beekeeping for honey, beeswax and pollination
- Planning your homestead garden for fresh eating and food preservation
- Living more resourcefully through making home remedies and repurposing
- Expanding your kitchen skills for canning, pickling, making bone broth
