If you have kids in elementary school or younger, you’ve probably been preparing for the Easter bunnies arrival for days now. Lines from the song Here Comes Peter Cottontail are on repeat in your brain. Sing along- here comes Peter Cottontail, hopping down the bunny trail, hippity, hoppity, Easter’s on its way! You’re welcome for that, and there’s plenty more Easter fun in this post as I share six fun ways to have an epic Easter, explain some traditions like why we dye eggs and more. Plus, we have a giveaway!

Happy Easter:

Our Easter Sunday Traditions:

As a Christian family, Easter Sunday is sacred. You simply must attend and participate in all the family traditions set before you. These traditions look different for every family, but there are some over-arching themes like:

Dressing in Easter Sunday best and going to an early church service. This is sacred. With so much commercialism to this holiday, it’s nice to start off Easter in reflection and thankfulness. Yes, there will be stressful times ahead, but it’s worth it! Our church will be packed, babies will be crying and nerves will be tested from the parking lot on, but we will attend; to listen to powerful words and teachings so we remember why we celebrate this holiday- the resurrection of Jesus Christ.

Host/Attend Easter egg Hunts: Got younger kids?  Then you are either hosting or attending one or more Easter egg hunts, bless you!  Candy starts to smell pretty icky when it’s close to midnight and you are secretly stuffing brightly colored Easter eggs from the Easter bunny.  Never mind that in the south, the epic hunt will probably get rained out, solder on and always have a plan B. Oh and never forget the golden egg! Kids will look forever for it.

Our plan B: We’ve had many an egg hunt inside over the course of the years. We did our best to make it fun and got creative in our hiding places. We hid some eggs so well, that weeks later we’d find one or two, as did our cat! Fiona adores playing with empty Easter Eggs!

Coloring Eggs:

Due to busy schedules and the fact that my daughters are kid-adulting hard right now, we may not actually get to this tradition this year, which would be a shame since it's so much fun. Here's some eggs we decorated one year using a white crayon to add the designs. We really liked how well they turned out, and the deviled eggs I made with some of them later had interesting spots.

Easter Dinner:

Whether you go to Grandma’s house for an early dinner like we always did, or you host a family potluck, Easter calls for a huge amount of food! Easter is right up there with Christmas on the holiday food scale, so there is always a huge amount of food, so nobody goes home hungry or empty handed. Traditionally, our menus consisted of ham, green bean casserole, salads and corn, some form of potato dish, rolls of every variety, ditto on the pies, desserts and deviled eggs. Sound familiar? I’m betting it does.

Tisket, Tasket Easter Baskets:

Exploring the goodies found in daughters Easter basket #EasterTraditions #CatholicCentral #ad

Just thinking about Easter baskets takes me back in time. I can still remember some of my childhood Easter baskets filled with goodies. We always got a solid chocolate bunny and my siblings and I could tell if somebody snitched a bite because of the teeth marks left behind. My Mom insisted we keep our bunnies in the fridge, so you’d practically break a tooth trying to get a bite!

Once you become a parent, you are in charge of what goes into your kids baskets, so we would do a mix of treats, stuffed animals, toys and books.  If you think I no longer have to make up Easter baskets for my teen daughters, you’d be wrong. I tried just giving them candy for a year or two and the revolted at the idea, so yep, I’m that Mom still doing the Easter basket thing. Honestly, I’ll probably keep doing it until they get married and have kids of their own. Then, hello grandparent duties! No rush girls if you’re reading this post.
