If you’ve read my blog for a while, you know I love watching and discussing films, especially those with dramatic, sci-fi-filled stories like Dune. Imagine my delight when I was asked if I’d like to review Dune Prophecy- The Complete first season on 4K Ultra HD? I know for some, I’m a little late to this series, but I’m catching up now with Dune Prophecy, my first binge-worthy series of the summer.

Series Synopsis from HBO Max:

“From the expansive universe of Dune, created by acclaimed author Frank Herbert, and 10,000 years before the ascension of Paul Atreides, Dune: Prophecy follows two Harkonnen sisters as they combat forces that threaten the future of humankind and establish the fabled sect that will become known as the Bene Gesserit. Dune: Prophecy is inspired by the novel Sisterhood of Dune, written by Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson.”

My Thoughts:

The first episode in the series, The Hidden Hand, drew me and my husband (a huge Sci-Fi lover) in and kept us riveted, while making correlations between other films and TV series (hello, Acolyte) from beginning to end.

Sisters Valya and Tula Harkonnen are believable in their roles. Valya finds and uses her “voice” power early on in episode one, showing us the origin of what we now know as the Bene Gesserit. Valya is scary, even at this young age!

Mother Superior Raquella, on her deathbed, asks for Valya and tells her of their future- The Prophecy. Young Valya Harkonnen promises Mother Superior Raquella that she’ll protect the Sisterhood by putting one of their own on the Imperial Throne.

With sister Tula by her side, and some thirty years later, Valya faces a threat to her long-awaited plan. Tula is the softer, kinder sister, showing empathy to the students (acolytes) attending and being trained at the Sisterhood school on Wallach IX.

In episode two, entitled Two Wolves, we meet Desmond Hart, a soldier with a strange past and scary psychic abilities, who shows up wishing to gain the trust of Emperor Javicco Corrino. Everything the Sisterhood has been working for ( putting one of their own on the imperial thrown) is set ablaze in this tense episode.

We haven’t finished episode three, Sisterhood Above All, which goes back in years to share sister Tula’s worries about being accepted into the sisterhood, even though she’s a Harkonnen.

The Takeaway:

This is an engrossing series; my husband and I find highly entertaining. We wait to finish it soon! The great thing about owning the series on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray is the special features, which include over 50 minutes of bonus content.

An exclusive featurette- Building Worlds, where the cast and crew take us behind the scenes, showcasing how they created the many worlds of Dune Prophecy. We also get to watch five extended Behind the Veil featurettes, making this a must-have for any Dune fan.
