“From A24 Films comes the true story of the inseparable Von Erich brothers, who made history in the intensely competitive world of professional wrestling in the early 1980s. Through tragedy and triumph, under the shadow of their domineering father and coach, the brothers seek larger-than-life immortality on the biggest stage in sports.”

My Thoughts:

I was never into watching wrestling on TV, so I had no pre-set opinions before watching this film. My husband did watch wrestling in his youth and actually remembered The Von Erich story but didn’t spoil it for me.

I  was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed watching this film! It’s gritty and heartbreaking. This film showcases the strong bond between brothers and family. And for the Von Erich brothers, what their father says, goes. Sometimes to the detriment of their own wants, needs, or safety.

The father was played superbly by Holt McCallany, but the true spotlight performance goes to Zac Efron as Kevin, the second oldest brother.

I haven’t been moved or seen my husband be moved by a performance like Zac’s in a long time. The Iron Claw stories are told through Kevin and all I can say is be prepared to feel all the emotions while watching this film.

Trigger Warning:

If tragedy has touched your family and you’ve lost a loved one, especially to suicide be prepared for real and raw emotions on screen, from not just Kevin, but from the whole ensemble cast, who give their all to their roles.

The Takeaway:

I don’t want to give any spoilers, so I’ll say if you are or have a wrestling fan in your life, go see this solidly good film. This is a film that spans the 70’s and 80’s well. The sets, clothes, and cars are appropriate for the timeframe.

The Iron Claw has a good cadence to it that is pleasing to the senses.  It’s not an overwhelming in-your-face rollercoaster blockbuster, and I don’t think that was the aim of the film. Its aim was to tell the very real and often tragic story of The Von Erichs, wrestlers who will always be remembered.
