Being a nature lover, especially one who loves forests, and a film lover, I couldn’t pass on the opportunity to see Mavka: The Forest Song, a fairytale film adventure that made its United States debut on August 15, 2023 via Shout! My Thoughts:
I make every attempt to provide non-spoiler reviews for new films, whether they are debuting at theaters, or like this one, are available to purchase or stream. Having said that, I’ll go on to say, given the rudimentary animation and overall storyline, I think it was a smart decision to make this a home entertainment.
I did like learning more about ancient Slavic traditions and folklore with a modern, up-to-date nod to Ukrainian values, music, culture, and designs, I found the soundtrack a delightful mix of modern and folk tunes. In fact, I think the soundtrack is where Mavka shines!
The Takeaway:
This is a fun and colorful family film with a lively soundtrack. There are a few darker, foreboding scenes that you’ll want to watch with younger kids, so I agree with the PG rating.
