About the Author Tony Evans:

Tony Evans Author #ad

After receiving this bible, I wanted to learn more about the author, beyond the basic knowledge I had. I knew he was a revered Texas minister of a mega church, but that was about it. From my search, I found out that Mr. Evans is the first African American to have both a study Bible and a full-Bible commentary with his name. What an amazing accomplishment for a man who already does so much for his ministry and the glory and understanding of God.

My Thoughts:

My first thought? Wow. This is a beautiful, leather bound study bible. The type of bible your grandfather or your Dad would have.  I’ve reviewed a few bible’s with study guides here on my blog, like the Day by Day Chronological bible  (which is a very helpful resource that I still use), but this one- The Tony Evans Study Bible was a bit intimidating at first.

Why? The answer is two-fold. To state the obvious, this study bible is big. Hefty in the hands-full lap big AND has over 1,400 pages!  You probably won’t be lugging this to church on Sunday, but you may want to take it with you to bible study to share and to also ask for clarification on certain verses.
Which leads me to the second part of my answer, the instructions pages, of which there are many. They are concise, but highly detailed instructions from Mr. Evans on how to read the bible so that you understand the meanings of word. Then there are instructions on how to study the bible to fully understand the meaning of the word.

In the section on in How to Study the Bible the Pay Attention to Context portion stuck with me because it applies to our everyday lives just as much as it does to reading and understanding the bible. Communication and understanding another’s spoken or written word are key to having a rich and rewarding life in my humble estimation.

Mr. Evans states that paying attention to context is extremely important if you want to accurately understand what the bible is saying. He says: “Some people just search the pages for an individual verse that speaks to their need of the moment without paying much attention to the verses around it. Reading this way is like treating the bible as a fortune cookie or as a collection of inspirational memes. “

Mr. Evans doesn’t know me, but he has already called me out on page 16 of his study bible with that statement.

At first, I was a little ashamed to admit that to you, but then I thought, no way should I feel guilt for reading the bible! I just need to learn to read it correctly and to understand the context of the verses I’m reading!

The Takeaway:
Full disclosure, I’m still in the Instructions portion of the Tony Evans Study Bible and I think that’s perfectly okay. We all need to learn and absorb lessons at our own pace, no matter the subject. When it comes to understanding the bible though, I think most of us would agree, we could us a little help with some of the verses if not all of them.
I thought I was doing well reading my daily bible verses and getting “into the word”- but now I understand all that I didn’t understand about context and comprehension. There is help throughout the study guide with

Hope Words:

Hope Words is my favorite study tool so far. As I said before, I’m not very far along with in this study bible, but I’m learning with each new segment I read and that is cause for hope, celebration and thankfulness.
