Last weekend was full of Memorial Day and birthday fun for me. I got to spend time with my family, eat delicious food at our annual summer kickoff BBQ, and my husband took me to see The Devil Wears Prada 2 on a special date. I am a huge fan of the original The Devil Wears Prada film, and my husband has watched it with me countless times, so it was sweet that he wanted to share in the experience of attending the sequel with me.

“Almost twenty years after making their iconic turns as Miranda, Andy, Emily and Nigel—Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway, Emily Blunt and Stanley Tucci return to the fashionable streets of New York City and the sleek offices of Runway Magazine in the eagerly awaited sequel to the 2006 phenomenon that defined a generation.
In The Devil Wears Prada 2, a seasoned Andy Sachs returns to a struggling Runway magazine and must team up with her former boss, Miranda Priestly, to save the publication from a digital-era crisis and a corporate takeover bid from Emily Charlton.”
My Thoughts: No Spoilers!
I’m thrilled to say that this much-anticipated film sequel did not disappoint. As a film critic, I strive to never read others' reviews of a film I’ve yet to see or write a review for, but it was hard not to read the amazing buzz this film was getting throughout May.
From the opening scene, the story grabs your attention with Andy at a journalism awards ceremony that has a plot twist of its own and sets in motion events that take her back to Runway and the devil herself, Miranda Priestly.
Andy soon learns that the Runway office is not the same as it was twenty years earlier, with two notable exceptions: Andy is still not welcome there, and Miranda is as icy as ever. With everything going digital, Miranda feels subdued and a little stressed out herself, since a recent scandal has Miranda on the ropes.
Emily, the overworked assistant of Miranda from 20years ago, has moved on from Runway, leaving only loyal and witty Nigel to help welcome Andy back as Runway’s Features Editor and Runway savior.
Even though the sequel has less of the bite of the original, it still offers plenty of drama, a couple of feel-good relationship subplots, and, of course, fashion and gorgeous location shots.
I very much enjoyed the interplay between the core four, as the stars have been dubbed. With good reason. Each is perfect in their respective roles. There are even murmurs of a willingness to see a Devil Wears Prada 3 if the script is great and they cast the core four.
The Takeaway:
My husband and I felt the buzz of excitement too at our local showing. We thought it was an entertaining film and made for a wonderful date.
At the end of the film, everyone applauded, and I overheard several say they wanted to see it again, and some mentioned they hadn’t seen the original film and wanted to now. So if this is you too, don’t shy away from seeing the sequel.
