About Steeped Coffee:

#steepedcoffee logo love

Steeped Coffee is the brainchild of Josh Wilbur, a surfer from Santa Cruz California. I hail from Northern California and can attest to the beauty of Santa Cruz, so I immediately felt a sort of homesickness when I received a cool detailed box of single serve coffee bags from Steeped Coffee. The compostable coffee bag idea came from Josh’s wish to replace K-Cups.

According to their website, Josh said in an interview with Entrepreneur’s HandbookIf you line up [K-Cup] pods sold since 2009, they would wrap around the planet over 110 times.“

Can you imagine seeing a line of K-Cups stretching out beyond your scope of vision? Wow. It's hard to fathom!

The Coffee Steeping System is born:

Their article goes on to state: Since k-Cups are nearly impossible to recycle, Josh and his team set out to solve this problem by creating the first patented coffee steeping system — a single-serve bag of specialty coffee that you place in a mug of hot water. It’s like tea, but not quite. Its name, you guessed it: Steeped Coffee. After the vision and business model was in place, they needed funding, so a Kickstarter campaign launched in November 2017.

How Stepped Coffee Stays Fresh:

Unlike tea leaves, coffee starts to go bad as soon as you grind the beans. In order to preserve the freshness, Steeped Coffee bags are sealed with nitrogen — so no oxygen can touch the grounds.

Also unlike tea leaves, which are larger than coffee grounds, the thread count of the Steeped bag had to have the perfect permeability to allow water in and flavor out, while not letting the tiny grounds escape into the cup. It took years of experimenting with grind settings, materials, and filter density.

Steeped Coffee is a Green Company:

The entire product is 100% compostable and ethically sourced. Each coffee bag is made of a non-GMO food-grade biodegradable material that you can drop in your garden or toss in your green bin. How cool is that? As a semi-regular K-Cup user, I usually take the time to clean out the cups and add them to my recycling basket, but after reading this, I think it’s time my family and I find a greener solution to quick coffee, so I’m thankful to be introduced to this upstart company that’s giving us another option.

My Thoughts:

I tried the Dark Roast Odyssey blend first, which Steeped Coffee describes as Characterized by its deep structure and full body, the Odyssey Blend yields a dark chocolate flavor and caramelized sweetness for the most inviting of journeys. This dessert-like extended-roast uses high-grown, high-density Latin American specialty coffee to achieve its smooth and consistent profile that is both forgiving and well rounded.

If you’ve ever made tea, you’ll be familiar with the concept of pouring hot water of the bag and letting it steep for five minutes, which is what I did to get this beautiful, fragrant dark roast cup of coffee.

The aroma is pleasant right from the packet, and I could smell the chocolate overtones and was hopeful that I could taste them as well and Odyssey did not disappoint! I’m not a black coffee drinker, but sipping on this coffee as is, was actually a pleasant experience. There was no acidity! I opted to add cream and sugar to my mid-afternoon cup, as did my daughter who was trying their Driftwood blend.

We both tasted and tried our cups black and with cream and sugar and agreed that both were a mighty fine cup of coffee! Truth be told- we were expecting Steeped Coffee to have an Instant coffee flavor profile, but it doesn’t. Because we are both lovers of freshly ground beans and freshly brewed coffee, we were delighted with the outcome of this steeped coffee and do highly recommend them!
