Are you living gluten free? #NoGiiLife snack bars may be for you

Sunday, June 28, 2015

We are not a gluten free family, but several of my daughters friends who visit our home have dietary restrictions, so when I was asked to review the NoGii line of protein bars, why protein powder and The G Free Diet book by Elisabeth Hasselbeck for free as part of the MomsMeet blogger group, I happily agreed. My opinions are my own and do not necessarily reflect the opinions of May Media Group LLC or the manufacturer of this product.

My WAHM Plan tries gluten free products

I received a box full of goodies, much to the delight of my daughters, who live to try new protein bars. Created by Elisabeth Hasselbeck, Gluten-Free Mom, Emmy Award-Winning Talk Show Host, and New York Times Best-Selling Author of “The G-Free Diet” and “Deliciously G-Free.

About NoGii Products:

NoGii is a line of certified gluten-free protein bars, protein powders, and paleo bars. Made from high quality and sustainably sourced premium ingredients, all products have an ideal balance of protein, fat, and carbohydrates and do not contain high fructose corn syrup, trans fats, or hydrogenated oils.

NoGii offers a variety of choices to provide you and your family with good, clean, certified gluten-free, and nutritional food choices that fit your active lifestyle.

We received boxes of high protein bars in:

  • Chocolate Peanut Butter Caramel Crisp- 30 g protein, 390 calories
  • Peanut butter & Chocolate- 20 g protein, 230 calories
  • Cocoa & Brownie- 20 g protein, 220 calories
  • Chocolate & Mint- 17 g protein, 230 calories
  • Chocolate Coconut- 17 g protein 240 calories

My Thoughts:

Even though my whole family enjoyed these high protein bars, and found them quite tasty and satisfying, I had to remind them that they each packed a pretty big calorie load and must be factored into our daily healthy living goals.

Personally, I found the paleo bars a much better choice for my goals and dietary needs. All bars are free of dairy, soy, high fructose/corn syrup, gluten, trans fat and peanuts making them a perfect on the go snack for our busy schedules.

My WAHM Plan tried Paleo bars

My favorite Paleo bar is Nuts and Berries, which has 4 grams of protein and just 180 calories. My daughters love the Paleo Nuts about Nuts bars, which have 5 grams of protein and 200 calories. Unfortunately none of us liked the flavor of the Nuts about Tropical fruit bars, which have 4 grams of protein and 190 calories. There was a hint of soapiness to the bar that we all found off putting.

The Vanilla Bean whey and quinoa protein powder made a delicious, satisfying after work out drink, with none of the bloating I felt using soy based products, so I’m thrilled with this product as well.

About the G Free Diet Book:

"For years, Elisabeth Hasselbeck couldn't figure out what was making her sick.  She asked doctors and consulted nutritionists, but no one seemed to have the answers. It wasn't until spending time in the Australian outback, living off the land, on the grueling TV Survivor show, that, ironically, her symptoms vanished.Returning home, she pinpointed the food that had been making her sick- gluten, the binding element in wheat."

My Thoughts:

Elisabeth starts chapter one My G-Free journey with this “I learned about gluten the hard way. I wrote this book so you don’t have to.” While I don’t subscribe to some of Elisabeth’s opinions on living gluten free whether you need to or not, I found The G free Diet book to be informative and helpful in navigating the gluten free lifestyle.  I now know to shop for and cook for company who come to our home.

If you are interested in learning more about Elisabeth’s journey from pain to loving what she eats, please visit nogii.com to learn more about her books and product line, or follow them Twitter, Instagram and Facebook where you can enter to win a trip to New York City, where you’ll meet and have lunch with Elisabeth Hasselbeck! Weekly Chore Prompt- Cleaning patio table and chairs

Monday, June 15, 2015

Ah, summer. You may be officially arriving next week- but here in the south, you are here in a big way. Temperatures will soar to a sultry 96 today in the Nashville area, so I’m making plans to tackle cleaning our patio table and chairs as early in the morning as possible this week.

chore,prompt,clean,patio,table,chairs,flowers,

We are fortunate enough to have a covered deck in our backyard and we enjoy spending time there eating, playing cards, or sitting and sipping ice cold lemonade while watching all the wildlife that visits our backyard.

Even though our table and chairs are under a roof- they still get really dirty! With birds and cats and other furry critters visiting our deck, I have to clean this space often to keep it looking like the photo above.   I’ve learned a few time saving tips I’ll share with you now.

The first order of business is deciding when to clean your outside table and chairs. To lesson dry time on patio seating, remove covers from chairs, benches etc. Store in garage or other dry location.

Next, sweep floor and walls around seating area to get rid of any debris, including spider webs.

If time permits, you can spray the whole area down with a pressure washer or hose, including table base and chairs.

Next, depending on what your table is made of you can either- lightly spray table top with water and use a microfiber towel to clean off dirt and grime.

If you have a glass table top like I do, I’ve found spraying off the table and then finishing with a spray of window cleaner, then drying with a towel works best and stays cleaner longer.

If table base and chairs are still wet, dry them now with a microfiber towel.

Now you’ll want to check out your cushions. If you have already cleaned them from seasonal storage, great! Just put your cushions back on.

If your cushions need cleaning, I suggest using a Shop-Vac. If you don’t own a Shop-Vac, you could bring your vacuum to the garage, or use a soft bristle brush to clean your cushions.

Replace cushions, arrange chairs/benches and add a seasonal container full of your favorite flowers and you are ready to enjoy your outdoor space.

Color of the Month - June 2015 - Turquoise

Thursday, June 11, 2015

One of the easiest and often prettiest ways I've found to lighten and brighten our home is with decorative glass items. My husband and I are both drawn to unique glass pieces, so you'll find of lot of it in our home. June's color of the month- Turquoise, was inspired by some of my favorite bottles and vases.

Turquoise bottles, vases, home decor, color, design, improve

The wonderful thing about  the color Turquoise is how each piece is unique in color depending on the light and the material. Some pieces look bluer, some pieces, greener. Yet all of them beckon you to dream of water and warm days.

Here's my Pinterest board for more inspiration and ideas on how to decorate your home and your life with this beautiful color.

Follow Linda A.'s board Color of the Month - June 2015 - Turquoise on Pinterest.

Happy warm summer days everyone!

Weekly Chore Prompt: Organizing Shoes

Monday, June 8, 2015

Happy Monday dear readers! As I was trying to get out the door to my very first blog conference on a recent Saturday morning, I tried multiple times to shut our foyer closet door but couldn’t because there was a rogue sneaker blocking the door. I picked the shoe up, looked for a free space to call its temporary home and found zero free space. Zip, nada. I couldn’t even find the sneaker's mate, so I did what any sane mom would do when she’s pressed for time - I chucked in the shoe and slammed the closet door. I knew the weekly chore prompt had to be organizing shoes!

weekly,chore,prompt,organizing,shoes

Having two daughters - a teen and a tween - means a lot of shoes, so I allotted more time for this chore. If you have an overflowing amount of shoes too, you have to pick a day and time you’ll have at least one hour to go through your closet or shoe storage space and pull out all the foot wear. Yes, all of it - even the winter boots.
If you’ve already tested out-of-season footwear for fit, feel and wear level - score one for you! Set those aside and focus on the shoes that you and your family will be wearing now and into summer.

Start Here:

  • Separate the shoes by person and season.
  • Next, separate those shoes by style (sneakers, sandals, flats, and boots).
  • Check shoes for wear, stains etc.  If shoes are in good condition, place in try on pile. There’s no reason to keep shoes that no longer fit the owner. This is especially important with kids!
  • Grab each kid and have them try on their shoes.

Ask these questions:

Does the footwear fit properly without hurting? If their toes and pinched, or if the heel rubs, think carefully if these shoes are worth saving.

Do you still like these shoes? This is a really important question with teens/tweens.

Can you pull together an outfit with these shoes? If your kids can’t, you may be holding on to shoes that no longer fit their style.

Continue to work through all your footwear in the house until you have your final keep pile.

Now it comes to picking the best storage solution for your family’s shoes.

Shoe organizing/storage solutions:

shoe storage bench

Some people prefer putting needed shoes in bedroom closets, but I prefer a more central location. We put our in-season shoes in the front foyer closet on a shoe organizer shelf and in shoe storage boxes.  We store out of season shoes and boots in their original boxes if possible, or shoe storage containers in the front foyer closet.

For summer flip flops, water shoes, slides, sneakers, etc. I allow family members to leave them under a bench in the mudroom/back hall for ease of use as we tend to use the garage and back door more often than the front door. You can find a variety on benches on sale like this one on Amazon (affiliate link).

Your cleaning and organizing style will help determine how best to store your family’s shoes. Cute baskets and bins, over the door shoe storage or a shelf organizing system are all perfectly good options that are affordable.

There’s no right or wrong way to store shoes. The hardest part is just getting started. Once this task is done though, you’ll be surprised at how good it feels to mark this off your chore list!

5 easy ways to keep your yearly business goals on track

Tuesday, June 2, 2015

It’s hard to believe it, but here we are- starting the sixth month of 2015! It wasn’t that long ago that we were all dreaming and setting goals for the New Year.  The first week of June is the perfect time for a mid-year check in with those goals. I did this on Sunday and while I have met some goals in my most areas of my life; I found I needed to re-route my path in other areas. Here are my 5 easy tips to get my yearly business goals back on track.

On My WAHM Plan tips to keep business goals on track

1. Make planning time a priority.
It’s not enough for me to say I want to re-work how I’m tracking my blog and social media assignments; I need to formulate an action plan. By setting aside 30 minutes to review what I’ve been doing so far this year, figure out what parts work and what parts are making me dislike this necessary task, I’ll be able to finish 2015 strong and have a true workable solution moving forward.

2. Purge,  Often.
This goes for all incoming items in your life: junk mail, emails from companies you might shop with in the summer, company catalogs, group invitations that don’t fit into your wheelhouse, etc.  Allow yourself to pass on a request or business event if it truly isn’t a good fit. Purging is easy once you allow yourself to make a decisive decision and then stick with it, which leads me to number three.

 3. Decide.
In business you can’t sit on the fence for long when it comes to making decisions to approve or reject money making projects, because at the end of the day- all businesses need to have money coming in at all times.  Set aside 15 minutes to list the pros and cons of a given situation and then make your choice. Then take an actionable step: make that call, or send that email, something that will put forward motion on your decision so you won’t talk yourself out if it.

4. Write it down.
You’ve made your decision; you’ve set your goals in motion. Good! But did you know that the simple act of writing them down helps your brain store them in your memory, making them much easier for you to remember and stick with? Try it! Write out one goal on a piece of pretty stationery, or jot it down on a colorful post-it note (my personal favorite), and it’s almost guaranteed you’ll remember to focus on that goal.

My WAHM Plan: grab a good pen and write it down!

5.Ask for help.
This tip is still a work in progress for me.  I still struggle with asking for help from my family. As a work-at-home-mom, (WAHM), I felt if I managed my time better, I could still do it all and take on a bigger work load. Wrong!
Now, my goal is to let my family and co-workers know when I have a big assignment, and then be ready to delegate when people ask me how they can help me. It’s easy for us to shrug off offers of help, but we really shouldn’t. Whether we need task oriented help, like please unload the dishwasher, or we just need an ally to help us remember to drink more water, by asking others to help you, you are inviting them into your life on a more personal level, which helps you be a better you!

Hopefully, my 5 easy tips will help you stay, or get back on track with your yearly business goals!
